"It is refreshing for a book to deal with a realistic situation in an honest way without glossing things over in a make-believe perfect way."
Children's Literature - Veronica Bartles
Jay lives and breathes basketball. When he scores the winning points for the Richmond Rockets, beating their rival team—the regional champion Centreville Cougars—for the first time in years, he thinks life is pretty near perfect. But when his house unexpectedly catches fire and his family has to move in with his grandfather, Jay finds himself deep in enemy territory. Faced with a choice between playing basketball for his hated rivals, the Centreville Cougars, or sitting out the rest of the season, Jay doesn't know which is worse. Gunnery tells a moving tale about finding the best in a difficult situation, and moving forward when your life plans are falling apart. Faced with the loss of his home, his school, his friends and his team, Jay discovers that his love of the game provides the healing power he needs. I recommend this book for anyone facing unexpected changes and trials, even if they don't play basketball. Reviewer: Veronica Bartles
