Out of Kilter
With his wife and son, Cliff Mills thinks he is sitting pretty. He works days as a highly-regarded auto mechanic, and nights on a college engineering degree. But he has to think again when a cruel depression, recession, economic downturn--or whatever the Sam Hill they want to call it instead of “disaster”--deals a crushing blow to him and a few million others. He is thrown out of work. Jobs are as scarce as dinosaurs. A bank failure robs him of his college tuition and he is faced with a major shift in his cherished goals. Even when he finds temporary work for a few days, his employer disappears with the money he needs to prevent eviction.

On top of it all, he’s sure he’s somehow let his family down. A friend in the same
boat asks if a fellow can afford to be honest anymore.

To avoid life in the local Hooverville, Cliff and his family are offered refuge in a small town where not only are his employment prospects likely worse, but he’ll have to adjust to a different way of life and learn a new set of skills if he’s to survive. It doesn’t help that he also lands square in the crosshairs of a gang of bootleggers who are ready to protect their territory with bullets. Everything in his life is truly Out of Kilter, and he’s pretty sure nobody’s doing anything about it.
