In Box's taut, suspenseful fifth Joe Picket novel (after 2004's Trophy Hunt), the Wyoming game warden is temporarily transferred from his backwater base, Saddlestring, to Jackson, a sophisticated tourist mecca, to replace warden Will Jensen, who apparently shot himself to death. Joe has his doubts about Will's "suicide," but little time to investigate given other distractions: a vast and remote territory to patrol, questionable practices by a hunting outfitter, pressure to approve an exclusive housing development on a wildlife trail and protests by animal rights activists. At home, Joe's contentious wife, Marybeth, deals with mysterious threats and daughter Sheridan's teenage angst. To complicate matters further, Joe's reputation as a hardheaded law enforcer, unwilling to play politics, precedes him. Unusual for the genre, the skillfully orchestrated climax doesn't include a chase and the conclusion is ambivalent. Adept at setting his scenes, physically and psychologically, Box approaches Nevada Barr in his ability to describe the West's natural beauty. Saddlestring, WY, game warden Joe Pickett (Trophy Hunt) takes a temporary assignment in upscale Jackson, when friend and coworker Will Jensen dies from an apparent suicide. Joe immediately finds himself embroiled in the community's political games as various factions-animal rights activists, environmental extremists, and old-time hunters-compete for his endorsement. After his pickup truck is set afire, Joe becomes convinced that Will's death was a homicide, probably at the hands of one of these groups. His refusal to sign off on a building permit earns him the community's enmity, but it's not until an unforgettably tense trip into the high country that he realizes just how many people want him dead. Though a subplot involving wife Joe's wife, Marybeth, stretches credibility, Box's depiction of family tensions rings true. This fifth in a series is a Western lover's mystery, relying heavily on guns and honor; clearly, Joe's the real sheriff in town. Crime-fighting Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett outdoes himself during a temporary transfer from sleepy Saddlestring to fashionable Jackson Hole. Will Jensen, the Jackson game warden, was a great guy and a model warden, but once his wife left him six months ago, he spiraled into madness and suicide, and now Joe's been called to replace him. The transition is anything but smooth. There's no question of Joe's family coming with him, so he's reduced to hoping he can get a signal for the cell-phone calls he squeezes into his busy schedule. En route to his new posting, Joe has to pursue a marauding grizzly. He arrives to meet a formidable series of challenges. Cantankerous outfitter Smoke Van Horn wants to go on attracting elk with illegal salt licks without the new warden's interference.     Wa-a-ay Out of Range

    Because of where I live (NW WY) and what I do (Forest Ranger) people were always telling me to read the Joe Pickett series. Several years ago I took a first look at Box and the Pickett books. I was disappointed. I don't remember if I even finished the book. Box used an incorrect job title for the position of Forest Supervisor. I thought, "He's writing about a subject area and a character who does much his work on National Forest and he doesn't care enough to do basic research on the proper title of the person in charge of a given NF!?!"

    Because a promotion took me to Teton County and I needed something to read, I took another look at Box. I found a book where Pickett fills in as N Jackson warden following the suicide of the warden who worked there. Again, I was disappointed. Pickett responding to a report of a camp on the National Elk Refuge (NER)? Why would WG&F need to do that; NER is managed by the USFWS and they have plenty of personnel to respond to something like this. Mt. Leidy visible from the north end of the Teton Wilderness...uh no. "State cabin" in the Wilderness? No state land anywhere up there. There are Forest Service cabins that WG&F uses regularly; why not just say that? Just too many discrepancies and inaccuracies to overlook. My assumption is that Box does not write for those of us who live and work in the West. I see large displays of the Pickett series in the area--aimed at the tourists I guess. They can have 'im

    I have really enjoyed all of the Joe Pickett series books. Wish there were more. I have read them all.

    Great Series - Read them all one after the other

    I really enjoy this series. You wouldn't think it would appeal to a 50 something women but the main character is a real person who has a family, makes mistakes but lives up to his word. The Wyoming setting is beautifully described. Felt like I was there.

    Enough action to keep things interesting throughout.

    Start with #1 though because each book carries over to the next.

    Suprisingly Good Mystery

    Out of Range is a very good mystery with Joe Pickett as good,strong hero. I haven't come across many mysteries that I have enjoyed as much as this one.

    Can't You Write Any Faster!!!

    I love C.J. Box and his style of writing. I just wish he could write and publish his books faster. Out of Range keeps you in suspense from the first page to the last. Once I picked up Out of Range I found it very hard to put down. I would recommend Joe Pickett Novel to everyone who loves Wyoming or just the out doors. Thanks for the good reading and keep up the good work.

    Incredibly good

    Game Warden Joe Pickett who is based in Saddlestring, Twelve Sleep County in Wyoming is shocked when he hears that fellow game warden Will Jensen committed suicide. Joe¿s supervisor asks him to temporally take over Will¿s territory Jackson in Teton County; although it is not a good time to leave his wife and two daughters. He agrees to the temporary assignment in the hopes that he will obtain a better position and more income....................... Before he leaves, he asks his friend Nate Romanaski to watch his family because they are getting some strange calls that could prove dangerous. A spark ignites between Joe¿s wife and Nate one that they both try to ignore. Meanwhile, in Jackson, Joe is trying to deal with an ambitious supervisor ,an outfitter who doesn¿t adhere to the law and a developer who needs Joe approval to get his project off the ground. In an ominous turn of events Joe is exhibiting the same symptoms that Will experienced before he committed suicide and he begins to suspect that he and Will were set up by a dangerous and ruthless enemy............................ C.J. Box has written some pretty spectacular books over the years but OUT OF RANGE is by far his best work to date. This literary and lyrical thriller is memorable and will be considered a classic. The protagonist is an everyman that people can identify with him even when he finds himself attracted to another woman but like his wife chooses to ignore it. The plot is Byzantine, dark, gritty, almost gothic in tone and will appeal not just to mystery fans but to anyone who loves a good book..................... Harriet Klausner
