Overview

The Out-of-Sync Child broke new ground by identifying Sensory Processing Disorder, a common but frequently misdiagnosed problem in which the central nervous system misinterprets messages from the senses. This newly revised edition features additional information from recent research on vision and hearing deficits, motor skill problems, nutrition and picky eaters, ADHA, autism, and other related disorders.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Kranowitz, a teacher who has worked for 20 years in the field of sensory integration dysfunction and has developed a screening program for its early identification, writes intelligently about a bewildering topic. Fairly common (an estimated 12%-30% of children are affected), the disorder is nevertheless baffling to experts and parents alike, in part because of its diverse, contradictory symptoms: such children may be either hypo- or hypersensitive. Often erroneously diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADD) or labeled "difficult, picky, clumsy, oversensitive, or inattentive," children with SI dysfunction exhibit unusual responses to touching and being touched, and/or to moving and being moved. In concise, well-organized chapters, Kranowitz reveals how the tactile, vestibular (pertaining to gravity and movement) and propriaceptive (pertaining to joints, muscles and ligaments) senses operate. Checklists and sidebars throughout the text compare the "normal" child in various situations to the child with sensory integration dysfunction. Asserting SI dysfunction is best treated by occupational therapy, not by medication, Kranowitz helps clear the way for families to understand a disorder that they may suspect but not have been able to pinpoint. This book has become my roadmap to understanding my child!

This book opened the door to my understanding of Sensory Processing Disorder and has given me the tools to understand and advocate for my own sensory sensitive child. I have bought copies for other family members as well. I now understand the basic underlying reasons why my child reacts to certain situations the way that she does, and have gained tremmendous patience with this new understanding and have taught others to understand her triggers and needs better. It has made for better family dinners and play dates overall. We still have a way to go, but we are making progress.

Read 'Raising a Sensory Smart Child' instead

This book may be useful for families with older children with SPD but for those of us with infants, toddlers, or pre-schoolers with the disorder 'Raising a Sensory Smart Child' is a lot more meaningful and a much easier read.

If you are looking for a broad overview of sensory processing, this is a great book to start with.

    It works!

This book is very benificial and eye opening. I could see my child through out it. Not only does it show what is happening with your child and why but how to help your child with it. We have tried several techniques to help our son's sensory issues. The best has been the downward brushing with a soft brush. It calms my Aspergers Teen instantly. Our Autisim teacher also told us about this. We bought a soft brush at walgreens (.69 cents). I went back and bought one for all of the vehicles and my purse and for his own sensory kit. This book has helped our family a lot!

    Depressing Book

As parents of an SI child, we found this book totally depressing. The message of the book seems to be that your child likely will never have anything resembling a normal life so prepare for battle. It was very emotionally deflating. The book was recommended to us by a number of people and we read 'glowing' on-line reviews. Therefore, we were shocked by the content of the book, which we feel simplifies the disorder (the examples are very stereotypical and most people we have spoken to felt that the examples never 'fit' their child and consequently the pat recommendations don't work either) and presents the disorder and hope for children with the disorder in a very negative way. We have since spoken with many parents who feel the same way after reading this book which, in our opinion, is over-recommended. Most people seem to treat this book as a panacea when it fact it can take years of complicated inter-related therapies to help an SI child. Reading this book won't do it.

    I Also Recommend:

I prefer Sugar's "The Silent Crisis Destroying America's Brightest Minds"

Sugar's 'The Silent Crisis Destroying America's Brightest Minds" is a book that is all about educational reality, the facts on the ground, not vacuous educational theories.

Sugar pioneered the SMARTGRADES school notebooks that contain the new learning technology, ACANDY Processing Tools, that empower students for academic success. She transformed my kids into Grade A students, so I speak from experience, not hypothetical theory. It is not all about teaching, it is all about learning.

A good resource for parents of children with Sensory Integrative Disorder

While this book can be repetitive at times, I think it is an excellent resource for parents of SI children to gain a new perspective on what their child is feeling, where their insecurities lie, and methods of coping with the disorder to help the children function in school and society.

    outstanding resource

This wonderful book provides a wealth of valuable information and guidance on a little-known, misunderstood disorder that can cause major difficulties in a child's life. I strongly recommend it to parents who know or suspect that their child might have SI Disorder, alone or with other disorder(s). --Sheryl Gurrentz, author of 'If Your Child is Bipolar'

Very Helpful To Parents and Teachers

This wonderful book helps in seeing things from a different angle other than just ADD or ADHD. It has changed our life in helping us to get the much needed understanding of our child. Whom many say was ADHD. But he still didn't fit in the full ADHD area.. This was indeed a blessing. I am so thankful for this book.
