"No puzzle here--these well-designed scenes are another success from the picture-challenge master." --KIRKUS REVIEWS
Children's Literature - Mary Hynes-Berry
Walter Wick has made a small industry out of collecting a potpourri of toys and ordinary objects that suggest a story; he photographs the assemblage in a setting such as a child's bedroom; alternatively, he uses Photoshop; in any case, the margin provides a list for children to play "I spy" with, such as: "a top still spinning, a shovel, a rake, 3 nuts, a nail, an upside down cake..." The sixteen picture puzzles in this particular book have a time traveler theme; the silver robot on cover photo is clearly using his spaceship to travel back in time to a castle filled with knights and princesses. Quite aside from the fun of solving the puzzles, creative youngsters might be inspired to set up their own "I Spy" assemblages and photo them to challenge a family member or classmate with a "Can you See what I see?" puzzle of their own. Writing the list could turn into an engaging literacy activity! Reviewer: Mary Hynes-Berry
