    Excellent story

I won't waste your time by telling the whole story, as some do; I will tell youthat if you enjoy a well-written story with fully-fleshed, interesting characters with a twist of paradox neatly avoided, you'll enjoy this book tremendously. Further, you'll immediately buy the rest in the series, as I just did. Now go read already!

    Excellent story!

The description of Out of Time caught my attention, and so I downloaded the sample to my ereader. I knew within the first couple of "pages" that I'd have to read the entire book. The characters are likable and realistic, yet still "larger than life." The plot is captivating and unpredictable. But there's more to this book than romance; it has mystery and danger and vampires. And it has romance! I don't normally gush about books. Out of Time is gush-worthy! It's extraordinarily well-written in every way. I love this book and highly recommend it!

    Avid Reader

While this wasn't quite what I expected, I was pleased with what I got...a well-written, and engrossing, story. No discernable plot-line holes, and no pseudo-cliffhanger ending that leaves you with unanswered questions. A full length book for free - an excellent deal.

    not for me

looking for si-fi got romance, to much. 5% si-fi 95% fluff. I could not finish the book. The book was free but the time spent trying to find some meat in it is gone forever.

I really enjoyed. Would have given it a 5 if not for wanting to

I really enjoyed. Would have given it a 5 if not for wanting to slap Elizabeth every now and then. I love the writing and the plot and the last page left me wanting more, I am now a third of the way through book 3 in just over a week. Quick, easy reads.

Great story and worth the read - Enjoy!!

This is a time travel romance, with several interesting twists and turns. Good plot, good premise, and very well-written. Anyone interested in the New York 1920s would enjoy the gritty, up close look at life back then. I would recommend this book for women more than for men, although some men might also enjoy it. I thoroughly enjoyed it and wished the story could have continued. It was well worth reading, and it kept this very picky reader quite entertained. I'll look for more from this author - I believe the series continues.

    Time travel

This book started well! Then once the time travel happened it began to unravel. Not a good history description at all. The hero if you can call him that was whiny and worried all the darn time. It was boring after awhile. For all his supposed knowledge of the occult he really just was annoying. Perhaps the second book is better. Debating whether it is worth trying.

    Good Stuff

I really liked this book. It was definitely not what I expected and was better for it. I liked the characters and the way they fought through obstacles ranging from mundane to extraordinary. I am a sucker for a good love story and this one was great :)

Great paranormal romance in an original setting.

Set in the Roaring '20s, OUT OF TIME by Monique Martin is a roaring good read! With a backdrop of gangsters, speakeasies, and Prohibition, the romance that develops in this romantic urban fantasy is nothing short of gripping. Simon Cross is a professor of Occult Studies at a California university. He and his graduate assistant, Elizabeth West, have an easy working relationship, despite the attraction they both feel for one another. One evening, Elizabeth brings some graded papers over to Simon's home to drop them off, and while she's there they manage to activate a pocket watch that had belonged to Simon's grandfather. Neither of them realizes that the watch is, in fact, a time travel device and the next thing they know, they're in an alley in the 1920's. I absolutely love the characters in this story. Simon and Elizabeth are both wonderful. Simon has the quintessential acidic British wit-dry and full of snark. I laughed out loud at several of his caustic comments. Elizabeth, on the other hand, is a perfect foil for him. She's very diplomatic and often smoothes the feathers that Simon ruffles. At the same time, she's no push-over and doesn't hesitate to stand up to Simon or anyone else. She's a perfect mix of sweet and tough. The supporting cast is equally engaging. There's the tough but lovable Charlie Blue who befriends them, and then the villainous King Kashian. All of the characters are painted deftly and contribute to the overall story. Almost another character in its own right is the setting. The Roaring '20s is presented in all the glory of the time period, but also accurately. I wouldn't have minded seeing a bit more of the "Flapper" culture, such as what we see in The Great Gatsby, but we're still treated to a look at some of the cultural icons of the day. One of my favorite scenes is when Simon and Elizabeth go on an outing to Coney Island. Ms. Martin describes it so well that I could picture perfectly the rides, the games, the food vendors and it allowed me to share some of the joy and wonder that Simon and Elizabeth had as they explored. The only problem I had with Out of Time is that it dragged a bit in the middle. The beginning was full of adventure and our fearless couple trying to survive being transplanted out of the blue into a different time, but the mid-chapters just seemed to be building... and building... and building. Eventually, the story reached the boiling point and everything took off again, but there was a bit of plodding. Also of note was while one of the characters IS a vampire, I would in no way classify this as a vampire story. In fact, I think the story would have been almost exactly the same had that character been mortal and that raised the question of "Why make him a vampire?" I can only assume that it's to introduce the idea that paranormal creatures do exist in this world setting. That aside (and truthfully, they're both VERY small quibbles), OUT OF TIME is a fantastic read. Elizabeth and Simon and so great together, you can't help but pull for them through the entire book. A perfect mix of romance and urban fantasy, you won't regret spending time with Monique Martin in OUT OF TIME. Originally reviewed for The Romance Reviews.

    OK

If only the irritating little twit Elizabeth weren't in it, I would recommend it. But she is, so I can't.

Highly recommended - couldn't put it down!

This was a perfect blend of paranormal romance and sci-fi. If you like either of those genres, you'll love this book. I absolutely loved the 3rd person POV writing style. It gives the reader quite a bit more information than they normally would have had. The plot is well thought out, intriguing and will keep you on your toes 'til the very end. I can say, in all honestly, that I lost some sleep from not being able to put this down. I loved the pseudo father figure that was Charlie. He was my favorite character. After purchasing 3 books since buying my Nook a week ago, this one was my favorite. My only complaint, is that the romance could have been a bit deeper. I found myself unable to 'feel' the love that the two main characters shared. But all in all, it was believable. If you like time travel and anything to do with the paranormal, you'll love this book and I highly recommend it.

    more from this reviewer

Perfect blend of romance, paranormal and sci-fi!

About the book: Simon Cross was different. He was a professor at the University of California Santa Barbara. But it wasn't his profession that set him apart, but that he was a professor of Occult Studies. He took the study of the occult very seriously, as his grandfather had before him; and, even though his introductory class was very popular, his colleagues did not view him seriously.

Elizabeth West had taken his class and had ended up changing her major and becoming his graduate teaching assistant. Little did she know what a life changing event that would be.

Simon and Elizaabeth had an interesting relationship. They weren't really friends and yet they each were harboring an attraction for the other that ran deeper than friendship. It wasn't until they were unwittingly transported back in time before they allowed themselves the freedom to let the attraction shine. (It probably helped that they weren't sure about how to get back. . .)

Going back in time seemed to be an answer to everything they had hoped for, both professionally and personally. They were able to discover things about their area of study that they had only dreamed about. The time proved to be more dangerous than they thought and they wondered if they would be able to reach the day they thought they could return to the present or if they would be Out of Time. (Did you like the way I did that?)

My thoughts: Let me start by saying this was the first book that I read on my new Nook that I got for Christmas - and I am so happy that I LOVED the first book that I read on my Nook! It makes me want to read more on it (because I was a little concerned that I wouldn't like to not have an actual "book" in my hands). This was the perfect blend of romance, paranormal, and - what would you classify time travel as - science fiction? None of them outweighed the others, but blended together beautifully in the story. This was Monique Martin's first novel, but I am hoping for more. I would love to see Simon and Elizabeth go on another adventure together!

You'll love this if you like time travel

Monique Martin does a nice job in created a good time travel story that zaps a "very proper" couple ... specifically college professor and student assistant ... back to just prior to Black Tuesday in 1929.
She does an excellent job with the time line and the customs of that era, mixing the couple's trial and tribulations in search of evidence to back up some of the professor's "modern era" research.
The plot does bog down occasionally, but she still make it interesting enough to not put the book down for an extended period of time.
I enjoyed it ... didn't quite make the call on how the story would conclude ... but really liked the conclusion.
I'd give her five stars for effort, but overall, it was a three because it lacked the dynamic story line which might have been expected ... or at least I had expected.

    Fun Read!

Very entertaining without bogging down (think Steven King, too wordy). I started with a later book and backtracked to the first one. I may just have to purchase the others just to see what Elizabeth trips into next :)....I will recommend this to others.
