Out of Time

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
In contrast to the directness of Green and Document, this may seem like a return to the abstractness of the early years, but that isn't the case. Out of Time is among R.E.M.'s best work -- a mature, balanced, graceful collection of pop songs quite different from Murmur and Reckoning. Buck, Berry, and Mills switch instruments frequently, keeping the music fresh and exciting.

    A great album

This one has several radio hits but the album fits together extremely well and taken as a whole its one of their best and one worthy of owning.

    4 and a half stars

I find this album a little frustrating, as though many songs are stunning, it lacks the edge that Automatic For The People has. Songs like Shiny Happy People don't really do anything to change my mind about my position. But it has many more virtues than vices, and a charm similar to Pet Sounds. It finds the band in the midst of developing into a superstar studio outfit, and the jangly sound that charachterised their underground years breaks through in songs like Texarkana and Belong. If you've listened to Can't Get There From Here on Fables of the Reconstruction, you might find a parallel in the equally ridiculous Radio Song. The real weight is Losing My Religion, but songs like Half A World Away echo the same sentiments. Buck's experiments of Mandolin, and Mills pursuits in keyboards on the album make it so interesting. Its will definately not disappoint you. But still, you might have a ringing doubt, that it's just a little too sweet. The tastebuds are yours, though.

    TRULY A CLASSIC!!!

Out of Time is a return to the more personal side of music rather than the political tone of Document and Green, but it is better than anything R.E.M. had ever done before (which is quite a feat). Despite an overall softer, more acoustic sound, no songs sound alike and all are great and can stand on their own. Everyone knows ''Losing My Religion'' but ''Low'', ''Radio Song'', ''Near Wild Heaven'', and ''Endgame'' are also spectacular. If you like R.E.M. or even if you're just a fan of music in general BUY THIS ALBUM you won't be disappointed
