Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
The canine stars of this daffily dapper tale may be ``the best of friends,'' but Mrs. Burdle is constantly late while her pal Mr. Howgego is doggy-on-the-spot. When Mrs. Burdle attempts to mend her ways, fate intervenes: as she awaits her invited guest with promptly prepared provisions, the customarily punctilious Mr. Howgego is detained under singular circumstances he is swept out to sea, rescued by a fishing boat, taken for a ride in a hot-air balloon, etc.. Lamont's scenario blends a cozy familiarity ``Mrs. Burdle was feeling very sleepy in the pleasant afternoon sunshine'' with farfetched plot elements sure to tickle the intended audience. And her lively watercolors, with hero and heroine turned out in turn-of-the-century clothing and furnishings Mr. H's crank-up jalopy is an especial delight, abound with homey touches that provide charm and humor. The handsome design adds to the book's joviality, as triptych-like panels merge happily with larger pictures and themed spot art. Ages 4-7. Apr.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-Mr. Howgego was never late for anything. Mrs. Burdle was never on time. ``Better late than never'' was her motto, ``Better never late,'' was his reply. To show she can be on time, Mrs. Burdle invites her friend to lunch at 12 o'clock sharp. While her carefully timed preparations proceed smoothly, Mr. Howgego finds himself caught up in a series of wild mishaps and arrives for lunch four hours late. Lamont's watercolor illustrations of two anthropomorphized dogs in old-fashioned clothes have an expressive yet gentle humor. They are nicely placed on the page with a variety of single scenes and action-series panels. For example, Mrs. Burdle does a self-satisfied little jig at having everthing ready on schedule while across the bottom of the page a harried Mr. Howgego drives his car into a swollen stream and just manages to save himself by grabbing onto a floating branch. While the concept of being punctual ``like clock work'' is one many young children may not grasp completely, they will enjoy the juxtaposition of Mrs. Burdle's orderly day and Mr. Howgego's adventures.-Karen James, Louisville Free Public Library, KY
