Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Outcast by Lynne Ewing, the third installment in her paper-over-board Sons of the Dark series, focuses on Kyle, a modern-day teen from L.A. who rooms with Berto, shape-shifting Obie from the launch title, Barbarian, and Samuel, the American frontiersman from Escape. All of them seek refuge in the present from the shadow world of Nefandus, but are the other three turning on Kyle? And why does he feel as if he's being stalked by his past? School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-Once again readers meet the Sons of the Dark. In the previous installments, two of the four teens discover their talents and learn how strong the pull is from their native world, Nefandus. Now Kyle is acting oddly, and his blackouts are causing him to wake up more and more frequently in the midst of bizarre situations. When he and his friends discover the cause, they realize that the only way to help him is to rejoin him with the evil that is creating his problems. Is Kyle's newfound power strong enough to absorb it? In this book, readers also find out a bit more about what happened in the "Daughters of the Moon" series (Hyperion) after the Becoming, and more about the teens' powers. The characters are fairly predictable, but fans of the series will be reassured by the fact that these four hunks will always be exactly what they are right now. Each power builds on the powers of the other boys, so readers will anxiously await the fourth book to see exactly what Berto's strong suit will be. This is a must for those who enjoyed the first two books.-Lynn Evarts, Sauk Prairie High School, Prairie du Sac, WI Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

    UNDESCRIBABLE

On a perfessional level this book was written greatly, I love all of Ewings books. But I kinda hated it on a personal level, Kyle basicly stood around while the Daughters are basicly being tortured! It ticks me off there hasn't been a 13 to the DOTM series yet, and I really get angry when people say it's all over because the books aren't selling!! Hopefully the fourth in this series will calm me down, for a day at least...

    Wow!

I think 'Outcast' was a wonderful book! It was so suspenseful, and I couldn't put it down! I loved how it was so different from any other book. It was dramatic, comical, and even romantic. I love that an author puts all those qualities in one book. I also felt bad for Kyle. It seemed like he almost got punished for being lonley. The book was written great, and had an awesome ending. I deffinitley reccommend this book to anyone! Full of adventure!

    Disapointed

GREAT BOOK, mainly beacuse the charicter (KYLE ROCKS!) but, I HATED that they talked about Catty being in trouble and her leaving a note for him not to come, but he actually does nothing! They did not mention Catty ever again!! If he 'loved' her so much, how could he be worried about her one day, and then be on a date with Emily the next?! Outragous! I do hope the 4th is better. Good plot though, and great charicter.

    Outcast

Outcast, the perfect book for teens, the plot twists and turns throughout the book and keeps you thouroughly interested. The amazing portrayal of characters, especially Kyle who is the focus in this particular book, keeps you latched onto every word right from the start. The amount of thought put into each, is astounding. In the book, Kyle comes face to face with the 'tulpa' he created in his lonely childhood (imaginary friend). The 'tulpa' (Kent) claims to be Kyles brother and has to kill Kyle to become alive! Kent envies Kyles wasting time so decides to live a bit for him, ruining things for him a little, with his girlfriend, room mates and others, leaving Kyle to make things up to people who get hurt in the proccess. Throughout the book, Kyles struggle to repress his longing to fit in is portrayed through His creating Kent. His fight to stop Kent is stopped when his mother visits him from the underworld of the atrox (great evil set out to steal the joy from the world and rule over it)'Nefandus' tells him 'hatred cannot be conquered by hatred, but by love alone is destroyed.' Overall, lynne Ewings extensive knowledge and understanding of the teenage mind and mythology contribute greatly to the success of this book.

    Where's #4?

I enjoyed this book immensely. The author keeps pulling you further and further into these characters' stories. I can't wait for number 4. Just wondering how long I will have to wait for that one.

    loved it!!

Although i really don't like the cover of the book, the book was really good and somehow reading it made me feel a bit sorry for Kyle. Everyone he knows is always blaming him or accusing him for something he didn't do and that made Kyle feel really confused about whats been going on until he meets his evil 'twin' Kent. In this book, we finally actually know what has happen to the Daughters and its so not good. I really loved the plot of the book and im looking forward to reading Night Sun. I hope that the next Daughters book will be out soon though cuz its taking too long to be released.

    Untitled

I think this book one one of the best books so far. but yet that has a tendensy to happen. I think i best like the fact that the description of kyle made him sound so hot. But i'm confused on the fact that all the boyies are so sensetive and emotional. It makes no sense but over all it's a good book.
