Meet the Author

Brian Jacques
Brian Jacques
Following in the grand tradition of Watership Down, Brian Jacques’ bestselling Redwall books star animals in medieval England who must protect their home against evil. Equal parts enchanting fantasy and morality tale, these adventure-filled books have captivated readers worldwide.

Biography

The drawings that open the chapters in a Redwall book may look sweet, but Brian Jacques' fantasies are not for the faint of heart. Adventure, peril, betrayal, and downright slaughter abound in these hefty novels about the creatures -- mice, hares, moles, badgers, and sparrows -- who inhabit Redwall Abbey in medieval England.

Brian Jacques has had a life nearly as exciting as that of some of his characters: After dropping out of school in his native Liverpool at the age of 15, he traveled the world as a merchant seaman, visiting ports from America to Asia. Upon returning to England, he held a wide variety of jobs, from railway fireman to boxer among them. In the 1960s, he and his two brothers formed the Liverpool Fishermen, a folksinging group. Jacques also tried his hand as a playwright, producing several stage plays -- Brown Bitter, Wet Nellies, Scouse – about native Liverpudlians.

The Redwall stories, which were to earn him legions of fans, were born out of his time as a volunteer storyteller at the Royal Wavertree School for the Blind in Liverpool. Jacques maintains that his detailed writing style was developed here; he was forced to be as descriptive as possible, so his audience would be able to experience his stories as if they could see. He created the first Redwall story as a gift to the children of the school, but never intended to publish it commercially. Fortunately for his many fans on both sides of the Atlantic, a friend sent his first manuscript to a publisher, and the rousing series took off in England in 1986 and in the U.S. the following year with Redwall.

Jacques takes issue with the notion that his books are "fantasy" fiction, a description that he says "smacks of swords and sorcery and dungeons and dragons. . . . I like to think of my books as old-fashioned adventures that happened ‘Once upon a time, long ago and far away.'"

The novels appeal generally to an audience of nine- to fifteen-year-olds, but have admirers both younger and older. The tales pivot on the conflict between good and evil; good invariably triumphs. Indeed, morality issues are always clear in Jacques' books: cruelty, greed, and avarice are eradicated in all forms; bravery, loyalty, and resourcefulness reap rewards aplenty. When it comes to characters, though, Jacques is less simplistic: Martin the Warrior, who through his courage and cunning rose to become the noblest hero in the land, is given to impetuousness, and the miscreant Cluny has both good and bad sides, a la Long John Silver.

For female readers, the Redwall books can be extra satisfying. His female creatures are as adventurous as the males: they don't faint into their male counterparts' arms, but explore, swashbuckle, and rescue on their own. In Mariel of Redwall (1991), the courageous girl mousechild Mariel, thrown overboard by the Gabool, leader of the evil pirate Searats, exacts her own brand of revenge.

Jacques' usually swift pace sometimes comes to a slogging halt with extraordinarily detailed descriptions of the legendary Redwall feasts, right down to the last acorn and drop of buttercup and honey cordial. But the author is redeemed by his delicate interweaving of subplots, his memorable menagerie, his rollicking sense of adventure, and his ability to transport the reader into an entirely different world, a world that, as one critic for The New York Times put it, "is both an incredible and ingratiating place, one to which readers will doubtless cheerfully return."

Good To Know

Brian Jacques wrote his books in longhand or on a manual typewriter, or, if the weather permits, outdoors.

Despite his success as an author, Jacques continued to broadcast the weekly radio show, Jakestown, that he hosted before he wrote the Redwall books.

    Huge Fan

I have been hooked since I read the first in the Redwall series. I find Brian Jacques' books engaging and full of great detail. The characters are incredibly developed, and you really get to know them through his writing and story telling. Even though the books are in the Teen section, I find them just as enjoyable as any book in the adult section. I have been flying through this series almost as fast as I did the Harry Potter series. FUN! ENJOYABLE! REFRESHING! GREAT STORY TELLING!

    GREAT REDWALL BOOK!

I thought it was very good, but i was dissapointed with the end. I really love ferrets and i really wished veil was a good guy. Also, the story more focused on Sunflash and Swartt Sixclaw and their ongoing fights. A good redwall book.

Beautiful, a book no one should miss

I cannot believe I put off reading this book for such a long time!!! (four years to be exact!!!) I read nearly all the other redwall books first and was only really satisfied with some of them. This one is one of those. It tells the story of two different outcast and how they intervene. For the first part of the book you meet sunflash the mace and his friend Skarlath who seek revenge on Swartt Sixclaw, a villianous ferret who is rising to power across the land from his treacherous ways. Then in book two, Swartt's son, Veil is a resident at redwall abbey. Having a niche for trouble, Bryony, his adpoted mother sticks up for him, because she thinks he can be good. But he is vermin and it is that undeniable truth that is proven when he tries to poison a fellow abbey-dweller. He is casted aside as an outcast and journeys to find his father. It is a story of how good and evil are not much different, as they are both misunderstood. The message is powerful and the delivery is dead aimed. It has the trademark Redwall standards-great food, exciting battles, and funny characters. It certainly is one of the best Redwall books around and should be your next read.

One of the Better Ones (Not That Any of Them are Bad)

I thought this was one of the better books of the series. It has one of the best heroes and one of the worst villains. The only thing I have to say is that, to me, the book seemed to be less about Veil and more about Swartt and Sunflash. I really enjoyed how much emotions were played up in this book. I also liked the idea of a creature who was brought up in the nurturing atmosphere of Redwall growing up and still being evil. It was something I didn't really think could be possible because the Abbey Dwelllers are so loving and kind. Once again the feasts made me drool (I can't wait for the cookbook to come out!). This is a very good book to read especially if you're just starting to read the Redwall novels.

    Beautiful Story

Brian Jacques has written over 15 books by now (and I own most of them); but this one is still among my favorite books of all time - Redwall or non-Redwall. The book's principal storyline follows Sunflash and his faithful friend Skarlath through their lives as they seek vengeance on Swartt Sixclaw (who in turn is also hunting them). However, halfway through this storyline is joined by another one; for during a skirmish along the path near Redwall Abbey, Swartt's young son (who no one has bothered to name) is left behind. The kind Abbeybeasts bring him back with them and give him into the care of a young mousemaid named Bryony. Bella - the Badger Mother for this book - names him Veil, darkly hinting that she will reveal the meaning behind his name later. This is where the book's hidden philosophical question arises: is it possible for someone to be naturally born so evil that no amount of kindness done them can eradicate it? Brian Jacques, in this beautiful, moving story, delivers a bittersweet answer to the question: one that you will remember for years and years to come after having read this novel.

Fans and readers would be blessed to get another one so good!

I love this book! When I first read this book I was astounded. Never had Brian Jacques gone so deeply into the emotions ever his characters. Readers and fans of Brian Jacques would be blessed to get another book as good as this one.

IT WAS NOT THE BEST, BUT I'M STILL GLAD I READ IT.

I REALLY LIKED IT IN THE BEGINNING BUT AFTER I WAS DONE..IT JUST WASN'T MY FAVORITE. SKARLATH AND SUNFLASH AND SWARTT AND VEIL WERE STILL AWSOME CHARACTERS THOUGH...

Just like the other Redwall stories. A real classic!

I thought that 'The Outcast of Redwall' was a great book! What I liked about is how Redwall is always so peaceful but then it gets attacked by vermin and always puts up a great fight. I like the action and exploration as well. The Redwall feasts usually make me hungry. Partly because Jacques goes into much detail. It's just a great story all around and highly reccomended by me! Try the others as well!

THE WORST OF THE SERIES I'VE READ!

This book was a disappointment. I didn't think some of the hares had the old witty humor they usually do. And the action isn't as fast-paced as the rest. The title is a flaw; I think it concentrated more on Sunflash the Mace than it did Veil. And the ferret doesn't become 'outcast' until about the last 100 pages.

What age is this book for?

This may seem sad to most people but as a sixteen year old I have read all of Brian Jacques books, his books are not only interesting but full of emotion and action. His very descrriptive writing also keeps the reader locked in on the book, as if addicted to his writing. For me, just reading this book has improved my sensory detail writing and my imagination. I think in this featured book was very interesting, a little rustier then his later books but still a good book. I recommend that all readers of all ages give this book a shot, I guarntee you'll learn something from it or be hooked to read more of his works.
