Overview

Photography and the outdoors could have been made for each other. This book is about making the most of that connection. Outdoor enthusiasts who want their photographs to do full justice to the quality of their outdoor experiences need look no further. Building on the foundations of the original Cicerone guide to outdoor photography, this second edition has been rewritten from the ground up, and expanded to cover a wide range of outdoor activities on land, in and on the water, in the air and in extreme environments. Fully up-to-date with the latest digital developments, it is naturally illustrated with a host of stunning images. Professional outdoor photographers Jon Sparks and Chiz Dakin introduce and explain essential technical concepts in the clearest possible language. The emphasis is on practical, realistic advice for people who want to take better photographs of what they like doing best, while still enjoying it to the max.

Meet the Author

Jon Sparks has been a full-time photographer since a 6-week trek in the Karakoram Mountains of Pakistan in 1990 convinced him that his passion from childhood should become his career. His name is now on almost 30 books, including guides to every current Nikon digital SLR. Jon is a member of the Outdoor Writers and Photographers Guild.

Chiz Dakin, winner of the Outdoor Writers and Photographers Guild Award for Excellence in Photography in 2008/9, is passionate about travelling and the outdoors. She is keen on mountain walking, scrambling and cycling and has visited all seven continents. Wherever she goes she always ensures she has her camera with her.
Jon Sparks has been passionate about photography and the outdoors since childhood. A six-week trek in Pakistan's Karakoram Mountains in 1990 was a turning point; the learning curve was steep, but the pictures were rewarding. His first exhibition soon followed, and four years later he became a full-time photographer.

Jon specialises in landscape and outdoor subjects, and his picture library includes images from New Zealand, Canada, Morocco, Australia, Pakistan, Jordan and over 20 European nations. He also supplies images to the global libraries Corbis and Alamy. He publishes Lake District greetings cards and postcards, and so far has his name on nearly 30 books.

Jon is a member of the Outdoor Writers and Photographers Guild. He lives in Garstang, Lancashire, close to the Forest of Bowland, which can be a distraction from writing.
Chiz Dakins cycle touring adventures almost happened by accident, when after a local photography trip by bike she realised that shed done 50 miles in a single day with a reasonably heavy load. This led to the disconnected logic that if she could do that once, she was now ready to tackle multi-day cycle touring, and two weeks later set out on the Lands End to John o Groats route.

Since then shes done several other multi-day trips including a pioneering Welsh coast cycle route (600 miles and 16km of ascent) but still maintains that you dont need to be seriously fit or fast to enjoy long multi-day routes. (She certainly makes no claim to being either!) She has also recently won an award for her photography.
