Randy Gerke's Outdoor Survival Guide blends easy to read, well organized text on what to do in a survival situation with straightforward instructions. He takes you from the probable psychological state you may find yourself, to building a shelter and foraging for food, through to stumbling upon a dangerous animal and everything in between. Not only should every outdoor enthusiast, scout, and nature loving family read and own this book, but everyone from the occasional hiker to those who drive a car. Outdoor Survival Guide should be slipped into every backpack and stowed in every glovebox. If read before any outdoor adventure, Gerke's clear-cut, candid advice on precautions and preparations could prove to be the key ingredients to surviving a life-threatening situation.

Outdoor Survival Guide by Randy Gerke is an outstanding overview of essential knowledge for anyone from novice outdoor enthusiasts to seasoned survivalists. The book is well organized and takes what could otherwise be dry and technical information and presents it in a very user-friendly and easily readable manner. Within each section, the skill sets are introduced in a linear progression so that each new skill presented builds off of something previously learned. This obviously comes from Gerke's extensive background in teaching wilderness survival for many years. The book is outlined in a very practical way so that it is easy to either read through cover to cover, or search through by topic to quickly find relevant information. The abundance of included photographs and illustrations enhance the quality of written knowledge contained in the book, so that concepts can be learned easily and efficiently. Compared to many similar books on the market, I prefer the simplicity of Outdoor Survival Guide. It does not bombard the reader with too much information, but at the same time makes sure to cover all the essential survival skills necessary to stay safe. I recommend it for anyone who spends time outdoors.

This book was really cool. I really loved it. I am an Eagle Scout myself and going into this book I wasnt expecting to learn anything really. But to my surprise I learned lots. From fire making without matches to filtering unsanitary water you get it all. The book really surprised me. The book starts with the description of the first thoughts you might have after first realizing you are stranded in the wilderness alone. It goes through the proper way to think and strategize while stranded. The most important thing is to not panic. Panic causes you do things you would never do that would cause you to use precious energy that could be used on survival. The book takes you through the steps necessary for survival. They start from the most important to the least important. The cool part was shelter building. From previous experiences I made sloppy shelters but I learned some new shelter building techniques. After that you learn the art of filtering water. The water you drink has to be safe, because if it isn't you can get seriously sick and it shows how to avoid that. There is an art to survival, and you have to actually be in that position to find out. The book in a way puts you in that place and gives you a glimpse of what that might be like. The book enhances your survival skills more that you will ever know. I really loved the book. It would be great for anybody to read. The book is like reading from Bear Grylls himself, so if you like him, then read this. After watching all those survival shows on the Discovery Channel you won't find anything in greater detail than this book. This is the book that will save your life.

Outdoor Survival Guide by Randy Gerke, is brilliantly simple, clear, and applicable to most any survival situation. But more than this, it is a "Can Do" book. The author not only teaches essential skills, but also nurtures within the reader a spirit of confidence, pro-activity, and creativity in addressing the first, and perhaps the most deciding question in survival with a resounding: "Yes, I can do this?" Every household should have one.
