Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Gavin made a name for himself as a "rock'n'roll" garden designer in the United Kingdom and Ireland through his writing and show on the BBC. Here, he showcases his widely popular style. After an introductory section devoted to his mentors, design philosophy, and approach, Gavin presents thematically grouped profiles of 25 of his stylish, contemporary landscape creations. He describes the process of making each garden and discusses the diverse influences (e.g., architecture, fashion, and popular culture) that have inspired their composition. Maps, planting plans, and a highlight of architectural details are provided in each profile. The book itself is a bit overdone, much like a trendy fashion or interior design magazine, with visual elements subordinating text (sometimes nearly unreadable owing to color, jarringly varying typeface size, and discordant overlayering). Useful only as a supplement to more practical, readable, and equally inspiring titles on contemporary garden design (e.g., Richard Hartlage's Bold Visions for the Garden).-Brian Lym, City Coll.
