Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Lucas presents a history of the British lesbian and gay activist group OutRage!, an organization analogous to ACT-UP in the United States. Each chapter describes a different campaign, or "zap," such as the outing of Anglican bishops and efforts to make the age of consent the same for homosexual and heterosexual sex. A member of Outrage! from 1990 to 1994, Lucas (Impertinent Decorum, Cassell Academic, 1994) provides a brief narrative in each chapter interspersed with firsthand accounts by fellow members. Lucas details the group's strategy and inner political struggles as well as the activists' perspectives on gay issues in 1990s Britain. This is such an insider's view, however, that readers unfamiliar with politics and gay rights in Britain may find the history disjointed and hard to follow. Recommended for libraries with large gay and lesbian or social activism collections.--Debra Moore, Loyola Marymount Univ. Lib., Los Angeles
