Overview

How can God demand justice and dispense mercy at the same time?

What meeting ground can exist between one who is infinitely holy and those who are totally sinful? The cross of Christ answers those questions and many more. So why do we take such an important symbol so lightly? We put it on bumper stickers and use it as a fashion accessory, seldom reflecting on its significance. Bill Farley urges you to examine the cross closely and discover the rich spiritual truths deep in its grain. Journey with him to the foot of the cross and learn transforming lessons from Jesus' suffering. Whether you're a new believer, an experienced Christian, or a veteran of ministry, making the cross central in your life will yield fresh insights into God's purpose for you. With this will come the power to achieve that purpose. Breathe in the revolutionary spirit of the cross. Listen as the cross tells you everything you need to know about God. Watch how it positively impacts your relationships with relatives, friends, even enemies. And see why the cross is most valuable not when worn around the neck but embraced by the heart.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
What does the cross symbolize? Americans who are inundated by constant images of the cross in jewelry, roadside shrines, the Red Cross symbol and church buildings may have only a superficial understanding of the cross's meaning, warns Farley, an evangelical pastor. He agrees with Martin Luther that the cross alone is the sum of Christian theology and issues a jeremiad of sorts against the ways our culture has cheapened it: "Familiarity breeds contempt," he cautions. Farley can adopt a stern tone-after all, he says he first understood the cross himself after reading the works of Jonathan Edwards. Still, he speaks the truth in love and humility; when he lashes out against "worldly Christians," for example, he has the grace to tell us stories about when he has fallen into that category himself. Farley is a strong writer with a memorable, hard-hitting message.(Feb.) Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
