All Music Guide - Jana Pendragon
This debut from one of the West Coast's finest should have brought Larry Dean the attention someone of his caliber deserves. With as much finesse as George Strait and as much gumption as fellow West Coaster Dwight Yoakam, this release represents Dean's evolution into the ranks of country music's elite. Starting out with his paean to roots rock & roll, "'It All Started' 30 Years Ago" written with Bill Graham, this cowboy kicks up some dust and never lets up.
Even when he is crooning a touching ballad, as he does on the Dean/Rocky Burnette/Ron Coleman tune "Whispering Wind," this artist is not afraid to expose true emotions. And, as a cowboy singer, Dean can stand side by side with Don Edwards and Michael Martin Murphy. Dean's charting hits include "Old Time Cowboy Movies," a slice of the Americana pie that documents a time and place long gone. Still, it is his ability to honky tonk that gives Dean his edge and allows him to roam wide and free. "Tramp," "Good Lookin' Liar," and his version of the very classic "There Stands the Glass" all suggest an artist whose talent is elevated above the common and mundane.
