Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
PreS-K-A mother bird and her five babies live in a tree outside a little boy's window. Every evening, they ask her what he is doing. To the repeating refrain of ``Is he asleep yet?'' she describes his activities-playing, bathing, listening to a story-until, at last tucked into bed, he falls asleep. A feeling of security comes through as the familiar bedtime rituals are described and is enlivened by touches of gentle humor. When mother bird mentions a snack, for example, her children imagine the boy enjoying a juicy, wiggly worm. Schuett's thickly painted pictures are imbued with the purples, deep blues, and greens of advancing darkness. Highlighted details give the impression of reflected nighttime light. The endpapers, the first of which shows the nest with five blue eggs and the last showing it empty except for a feather, make a nice pictorial frame for this tender bedtime story.-Karen James, Louisville Free Public Library, KY
