Overview

In 1921, when the earliest of the photographs in this book was taken, George V was on the throne, David Lloyd George was Prime Minister, and Queen Elizabeth II had not yet been born. That same year, the first helicopter made its shaky maiden flight over France, making international headlines. Almost 80 years later, booking a helicopter to take the color images for this book was a matter of routine for aerial photographer Jason Hawkes ‹ a far cry from the rickety biplanes used by Aerofilms for the early photography. Hawkes had been inspired by these old pictures of London and decided to recreate the same views to provide graphic evidence of the changes in the capital during the intervening years. The result is both a fascinating aerial history lesson and a photojournalistic delight.
