Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
The fulminating impact of one event on a family is explored in this richly nuanced tale. At 16, Mattie has run away with an older man, leaving her younger brother Jay and sister Kate to go on without her. Since their parents were killed in a car accident, the three children have lived in the Berkshire mountains of Massachusetts with their Aunt Georgia; Jay and Kate have adapted to their circumstances as best they could, but Mattie never has, and she departs the first chance she gets. The chasm Mattie leaves behind haunts Kate and Jay in different ways until, having heard almost nothing from her sister for four years, Kate turns 16 herself and sets out to make contact with Mattie. The narration's shifts in time underscore the many contrasts running through the novel: the jealousy vs. longing love of the two sisters, dark moodiness against hope for the future, the emotional difference between voluntary and enforced leave-taking. Guest's first novel was The Handsome Man. (12-up)

Gr 7 Up The sudden death of their parents in an auto accident leaves 13-year-old Kate and her older brother and sister devastated as they try to remain a family with Aunt Georgia in Massachusetts. Then handsome but irresponsible Dean appears on the scene, and he and Mattie run away together, leaving Kate and Jay bereft and bewildered. Three years later, Kate hears from Mattie, now separated from Dean and living with her baby in Nova Scotia. Kate, over Aunt Georgia's objections, resolves to go see Mattie in order to straighten out her feelings for her long absent sister. The trip itself is difficult; when Kate's pocket is picked and she loses all her money, only the kindness of a new friend enables her to complete the trip, and she and Mattie finally are together again. The meeting is not easy for either of them, but they do reach an understanding, and Mattie agrees to accompany Kate back to Massachusetts (with baby Kit), and the family is together again. The story of Kate's odyssey to self-understanding and acceptance of Mattie is somewhat understated but ultimately believable; however, the book may be a bit of a disappointment to readers of Guest's earlier The Handsome Man (Dell, 1981) as it contains little of the wit and sparkle found in that book. I couldn't put it down!

This book was really good. I couldn't put it down, I was constantly waiting whether Mattie would come home, or whether Katie would make it to her house safely. This was a great book--pick it up!
