Children's Literature
A dark skinned modern American couple and young son are shown riding a sleigh over the snow to Grandmother's house in this take off on the holiday classic. On the way they pick up Aunt May carrying presents and Uncle Ray carrying a guitar case. Grandpa climbs aboard with a fresh Christmas tree. On arrival they are greeted by other relatives of various skin tones and a table loaded with food for Thanksgiving. The immediate, bright pictures carry out the excitement and humor of the enterprise. The expressions on the face of the horse add to the fun. The rollicking rhyme has a surprise ending. Young children will enjoy the story again and again. The illustrations will have special appeal for African American children. This is a good addition to any Thanksgiving collection. 2004, Jump at the Sun/Hyperion Books for Children, Ages 3 to 7.—Carlee Hallman
