Overcoming Depression is a series of structured self-help workbooks for use for people experiencing depression. Developed in liaison with a wide range of health care practitioners, the course allows access to the proven Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) approach to treatment. With reading ages between 11 and 14, each workbook has been designed to offer essential jargon-free information and provides carefully sequenced series of questions designed to bring about change in how the person thinks and in what they do in order to improve how they feel. The course offers a clear model of intervention based on the Five Areas Assessment model of depression. The workbooks are designed for use by sufferers in liaison with a health care practitioner. The books are licensed for unlimited photocopying for use clinically and in teaching. An accompanying health care practitioner's manual teaches health care workers how to use the workbooks most effectively with those experiencing depression.

Editorial Reviews

Reviewer: John K. Larson, MD(Rush University Medical Center)
Description: "This large-format, softcover book is written by a cognitive/behavioral psychotherapist in Scotland. The book contains numerous illustrations, tables, and practical exercises organized into two parts. Part one contains 10 self-help workbooks, each dealing with one of five different aspects of depression. Part two is a brief guide for the clinician introducing cognitive concepts and techniques. "
Purpose: "This book is intended to meet the need for a collection of cognitively based explanations and exercises to assist the clinician in treating patients with depression. "
Audience: "It is clearly intended as a self-help guide for patients suffering from mild to moderate depression. It can be used alone, but is best used in conjunction with professional counseling. It can also be easily adapted for use in primary care settings. "
Features: "This is collection of practical explanations and exercises organized around five aspects pf depressive illness: situational/relationship problems, altered thinking, altered emotional feelings, altered physical feelings, and altered behavior. Topics include practical problem solving, assertiveness, extreme and unhelpful thinking, reduced activity, sleep problems, use of medication, and planning for the future The last section of the book, directed to the clinician, can also serve as a brief but excellent introduction to the principles and techniques of cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy. "
Assessment: "This book sets itself apart from a rather large pack of potential competitors by its clarity and practicality. It is particularly well-suited for use in practices that use predominantly cognitive-behavioral techniques in treating mild to moderate depression. Psychotherapists and psychiatrists in training will find it extremely helpful. It is destined to be highly regarded, particularly by clinicians who struggle to find relevant homework assignments for their patients who suffer from depressive illness. "
