Editorial Reviews

Psyc CRITIQUES: Contemporary Psychology
"Taking an action-oriented approach, [Ridley] challenges counselors 'to examine the relationship between their behavior toward minority groups and the consequences of that behavior'... Many of his case study vignettes are helpful. "— Patricia M. Berliner
Counseling Today
"This book is both powerful and sobering. It would serve as an excellent textbook for multicultural counseling classes. It could also be a resource for counselors who are critically examining their therapeutic work with minority clients or for institutions evaluating the services provided to these clients. Numerous examples throughout the book illustrate Ridley's points and help the text to come alive. This book and its message will be needed as long as minority clients have negative experiences in counseling due to counselors' unintentional racism. "— Kimberly Wagner

This is an informative new book that focuses on implications of the social phenomenon of racism for the mental health field. The intent is to improve the awareness of counselors of both their own unintentional biases and the resultant consequences for their minority clients. The purpose is to train effective mental health professionals and improve services rendered to minority populations by examining the presence of racism and discriminatory attitudes in the therapeutic setting. Specific recommendations for increasing therapists' awareness of unintentional bias and establishing effective treatment interventions with racially diverse patients are made. Changing demographics in the U.S. and the need to respond to the mental health needs of minority populations make this an important topic area. The materials presented are relevant for mental health practitioners working in diverse treatment settings. Advanced levels of training and experience are not required for readers to benefit from the concepts and principles outlined. The author is knowledgeable about the relevant clinical and experimental literature. Each chapter is well organized with clear statements of objectives, arguments, and supportive literature. The book includes numerous tables, charts, and graphic illustrations to highlight informational and theoretical concepts. Ample clinical and case-study materials are provided to further clarify major points. This is a very useful book for mental health practitioners and educators. The author successfully synthesizes the existing literature in social psychology, learning theory, classical psychoanalysis, and information processing to provide a conceptual framework for understandingracial prejudice and bias. Concrete and pragmatic recommendations for examining therapist behavior and promoting client change are provided. The comprehensive, scientist-practitioner model used by the author provides a valuable guide for training future mental health professionals.
