All Music Guide - Ken Dryden
This live two-CD set by Clark Terry originates from the long-defunct Atlanta night club E.J.'s. The trumpeter and flugelhornist is in his usual top form, accompanied by a local rhythm section consisting of pianist Johnny O'Neal, bassist Dewey Sampson and drummer James Martin.
Terry's fat tone is evident right away on the opener, "My Secret Love," then he jokes how the title of Dizzy Gillespie's "Ow" actually originated following a prank played upon him while he was working for Cab Calloway prior to playing this bebop classic. Due to the holiday setting of the gig, an up-tempo samba arrangement of "Jingle Bells" is appropriate. Terry scats instructions to his musicians to set up "All Blues" and "On Green Dolphin Street," during which he swings like mad but the band seems a little unsteady. As is the case with all of the recordings made at E.J.'s, the sound is muddy in places and not always well balanced, but this release is clearly worth acquiring if you're a fan of Terry's great trumpet playing.
