The amazing true story of the orphaned baby hippo and 130-year-old giant turtle whose remarkable friendship touched millions around the world.

Children's Literature - Mandy Cruz
An unlikely friendship formed between a 130 year old giant turtle and a baby hippopotamus after the tsunami on the Indian Sea December 2004. The hippopotamus, which got his name from one of the rescuers, was displaced after the tsunami flooded his habitat and claimed his mother. Thousands of volunteers worked tirelessly to load the baby hippo—who used every one of his 150 pounds to fight them off—onto a truck that would take him to an animal refuge. Once they arrived at the animal refuge the volunteers unloaded Owen into an area that had all a hippo would need, such as a pond and thicket. There were already inhabitants in this area, including a turtle named Mzee. Mzee, which is Swahili for old wise one, was the oldest inhabitant of the refuge and like most giant turtles preferred solitude. The refuge workers watched in awe as the friendship between this unfriendly turtle and lonely baby hippo quickly developed. Experts are still unsure if Owen so quickly took a liking to Mzee because he needed a maternal figure but they are not really trying to figure it out; they just enjoy watching them together. They are not the only ones. Since word got out about the unlikely friendship the refuge gets daily visitors who want to see the hippo and turtle. Not only is the story heartwarming but it teaches all of us that your best friend could very well be the most different from you. Not one of their differences, their age, their species, or their origin mattered, Owen and Mzee enjoy each other's company and that is what is really important. Reviewer: Mandy Cruz
