A girl and her father go owling on a moonlit winter night near the farm where they live. Bundled tight in wool clothes, they trudge through snow 'whiter than the milk in a cereal bowl' here and there, hidden in ink-blue shadows, a fox, raccoon, field mouse and deer watch them pass. An air of expectancy builds as Pa imitates the Great Horned Owl's call once without answer, then again. From out of the darkness 'an echo/ came threading its way/ through the trees.' Schoenherr's watercolor washes depict a New England few readers see: the bold stare of a nocturnal owl, a bird's-eye view of a farmhouse. If you have not read Owl Moon you would love it,like I do. It is about a kid and his father going owling. Owling is going to look for owls in the night. There were all kinds of animals in the illustrations like wolves and birds. They are outstanding. The details are outstanding too. The author told me what it felt like being so cold in the woods. It made me feel as cold as they were when he said "I could feel the cold as if someone's hand was icy palm-down was on my back." Even though it would be cold going owling i would still go. if you ever go owling make sure it's a full moon so you coul dsee in the woods.

Owl Moon by Jane Yolen is a lovely book. The story about an wintry adventure shared by a young girl and her father is enchanting and charming. The illustrations are beautiful and carry out the story well. My grandchildren and I will enjoy reading this book over and over.

All of her brothers had gone owling, yet she still hadn¿t. So late one winter night, her father takes her owling. She knows that ¿sometimes there¿s an owl and sometimes there isn¿t,¿ but she remains silent in hopes that she will see one. Owl Moon is an amazing book for children as well as people of all ages. The father and the little girl in this book depict what a good real life father-daughter bonding relationship could be like. From the owling trip that the girl and the father in this book take, you can even learn how to go owling yourself. This book also teaches you some real life values that you learn as a child, and then hold on to all through life. A couple of these values are to respect nature and to always have hope for the future. Jane Yolen lives in Western Massachusetts with her husband, and together they have three children and six grandchildren. She originally considered herself a poet and a journalist/nonfiction writer, but to her own surprise, she became a children¿s book writer instead. Yolen, Jane. Owl Moon. Exceptional story gorgeously illustrated. Worth every nickel you spend on it. I've purchased/gifted over 10 copies for family and friends and still don't have one of my own - but not for long!
It is a feel good, cuddle up and enjoy story to share.
Just a good story to read to my daughter. I hope I could take her out for owling in the next winter, she is just two year old now.

This book is about a young girl and her father go owling on a moonlit winter night near the farm where they live. He two bundled up trug through snow ¿whiter than the milk in a cereal bowl¿. They call to the owl and in the distance ¿an echo came through the woods threading its way through the trees¿. You can then see through the eyes of the owl. The phrase, 'When you go out owling you don't need words' sets a standard for this book. A little girl and her Pa go owling in hopes of seeing one. The little girl had always dreamed of going owling with her Pa. She states, 'I had been waiting to go....for a long, long time'. I didn't particularly care for this book too much. Yolen, Jane. A girl and her dad brave the cold, wintry weather to go to the woods to find the great horned owl and along the way see many other animals. A great story of a girl and her dad with something interesting to do together.

¿It was late one winter night, long past my bedtime, when pa and I went owling.¿ As the little boy and his pa make their way through the woods in the cold they heard the sounds of trains and dogs. Their ¿feet crunched over the crisp snow and little gray footprints followed.¿ While they were walking through the woods there was not any talking allowed. ¿If you go owling you have to be quiet,¿ said the little boy. The first time pa stopped to call out to an owl they didn¿t have any luck. The little boy knew, ¿sometimes there¿s an owl and sometimes there isn¿t.¿ They walked on in the very cold trying to make their own heat. As they moved through the dark shadows in the middle of the night they ¿came to a dark clearing in the woods.¿ Pa stopped and called out to the owls again. Will they ever get a response back from an owl or will they return home. She was born on February 11, 1939 in New York City. Her and her brother created a newspaper for their apartment. Jane and her brother wrote the articles and interviewed their neighbors. Her mother typed up the copies. The papers were sold for five cents usually to the same neighbors they had interviewed. ¿Five cents bought a lot of candy and comic books back in the day,¿ said Jane. She went to Smith College and by the end of her four years, she ¿was president of the Press Board, won all the poetry writing awards, the journalism award¿and wrote the lyrics to the class musical as well as starring in our senior show.¿ She has written more than 280 books. The book ¿Owl Moon¿ by Jane Yolen was published in 1987, and won the Caldecott Medal in 1988. Illustrations, which are skillfully done, are by John Schoenherr. Yolen was born in New York City on February 11, 1939 and now lives in Hatfield, Massachusetts. She attended Smith College, but later attended the University of Massachusetts to receive a Master¿s degree in education. She has also served on the Board of Directors of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators for twenty five years. Yolen is a distinguished author of more than 200 books. ¿Owl Moon¿ is about a young child and her father who go on an adventure in the woods to search for a Great Horned Owl on a cold, moonlit winter evening. While on their journey, the child¿s father calls out for an owl ¿Whoo-whoo-who-who-who-whoooooo,¿ but they had no luck. They continued to search and crunch through the snow. The child¿s father howls out once again, and this time something screeches back at them. Could it be the owl they have been searching for? I think this book is wonderful, and it allows a child respect the quiet, soothing pace of nature. The story is presented in a quiet fashion, which makes it very peaceful to read. Not only are the illustrations captivating, but they also go with the story perfectly. Throughout the illustrations, you are able to spot out different animals in the woods, and this also makes the story very enjoyable for children. Yolen writes, ¿When you go owling, you don¿t need words or warm or anything but hope.¿ I really think this is a wonderful quote from the book because it gives a moral lesson to children that they should never give up and that hope is all a person truly needs. Childhood memories last a life time. It's really nice to see them reflected through stories. That is exactly what Jane Yolen does in her story 'Owl Moon.' I can remember the times that I sat on the back porch with my grandfather and watched and listened for birds or owls. When the little girl and her Pa go owling at first they don't succeed in finding an owl. She says that her brothers told her that sometimes there isn't an owl. Will they find an owl before they turn back home? Maybe, maybe not. All you need is hope and faith. Jane Yolen wrote this book as a reflection and from inspiration of her husband David Stemple who take their children owling. The pictures in the book are beautiful. John Schoenherr done a great job. His drawings are a reflection of his own farm which is the farm featured in the story. I would recommend this book for the 2nd grade level. It was an easy read with short sentences. Yolen, Jane. Owl Moon is a Caldecott Medal Winner, it is about a young boy and his Pa who go off on an adventure in search of an owl. Owling is their families tradition. A tradition that the young boy has looked forward to for a long time. He and his Pa go off into the cold winter night in search of a Great Horned Owl. The boy has been told by his brothers, 'sometimes there's an owl and sometimes there isn't.' It is left up to you reader to find out. This is a great book to introduce children to nature. The illustrations are great. The text was so descriptive that it had me chilling from the cold winter night.

To children, Jane is a very popular author. She has written over 200 books for children, young adults, and adults. She is a storyteller of oral tradition. She is called ¿the Hans Christian Andersen of America¿ and is labeled as ¿a modern equivalent of Aesop.¿ She has served on the Board of Directors of the Society of Children¿s Book Writers and Illustrators. She was also the past president of the Science Fiction Writers of America. She is most famous for her book called Owl Moon. It won te Caldecott Award in 1988, been a Reading Rainbow book, it was 1989 Kentucky Bluegrass Master List, it has been translated into nine different languages, and has won many other awards. The reading level of the book is second grade, ninth month. The book tells the relationship between a father and daughter. It is hope that keeps her hoping to see an own. Pa howls and something screeches back. Could it be an owl? Or could it be just the wind? In the book, Pa says ¿The kind of hope that flies on silent wings under a shining Owl Moon.¿ So hope is all that a person needs. This book shows that when you have hope things will come true. This is a story about a little girl who goes with her dad to hunt for owl in the woods. It is very cold and it is dark. She is bundled in layers and layers of coats and jackets so she will stay warm. Her dad tries to call an owl and says, ¿Whoooooooooooo¿ but he does not succeed and so they continue to walk. Then suddenly they hear her dad¿s voice echoing back at them saying, ¿Who..Who¿Whoooooooo.¿ Then an owl comes right up to them and they get to see him using their flashlight. The little girl is excited and she can finally talk because she had to be very quiet in the woods so they could get to see an owl.
