Overview

The uniquely talented samurai kids are back — and ready to join forces with a ninja clan! — as the fast-paced martial arts series continues.

Across the valley, a drumbeat echoes. For ten days, the drum will call the mountain ryus to war, including the samurai kids from the Cockroach Ryu. Only Japan’s feudal emperor can stop the war, so Niya and Sensei Ki-Yaga set off on a grueling journey with all the Cockroaches, whose firm friendship and unusual skills must be put to the test in order to beg the Emperor to maintain peace. Sensei Ki-Yaga is respected and wise, but unfortunately, the last time he encountered the Emperor, the Emperor threatened to cut off his head. All seems hopeless until Ki-Yaga guides the Cockroaches to meet with the Owl Ninja clan. Samurai and ninja are supposed to be enemies, but can these two groups somehow work together to save the sensei and stop the battle in time?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cara Chancellor
The six young samurai of the Cockroach Ryu have done the unthinkable. Despite their handicaps—one missing a leg, a second an arm, a third his sight, a fourth his spirit, a fifth his courage, and the last of them an albino girl—they won last year's Samurai Trainee Games and shamed the boastful Dragon Ryu. Their success is due in no small part to their Sensei, Ki-Yaga, once a legendary warrior and samurai to the Emperor himself. Sensei believes teamwork and foresight always trump brute force, and, thus far, his unusual collection of students has proven him right. Now, a new threat looms: the war drums beat in the mountains, and in ten days, each ryu must choose a side in the forthcoming battle. No longer will the students be in training; they will fight, and, likely, die. Determined to prevent bloodshed and force the warlords to uphold a fifty-year peace, Ki-Yaga takes the six on a dangerous trek to the Imperial City. Once there, however, the students must confront their greatest challenge yet. They are unstoppable with Ki-Yaga behind them, but how will they fare when Sensei disappears? Fussell's crew is lively and entertaining, especially Niya, the one-legged narrator who makes up in cheekiness what he lacks in agility. The story shines when it revels in Sensei's dry, understated humor, yet is comparatively bland during what should be highly dramatic moments, such as when Niya almost drowns in a river. Nevertheless, the smartly paced action and sharply defined characters make this a fun, quick read with potential classroom application for character traits, comparison/contrast, and other basic literary concepts.
