Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carolyn Mott Ford
There are more than 130 different kids of owls so their habitats and habits are diverse. This book, part of the "Welcome to the World of Animals" series, does a good job of bringing together information for young readers in an interesting manner. The eye-catching photographs from various sources will help keep students engrossed. Each chapter contains a sidebar of relevant facts. Owls have sharp beaks and claws and keen senses to assist in hunting. Night-flying owls have fringes on their flight feathers to muffle the sound so that they can swoop silently down upon prey. Some owls play together when young and some "talk" to one another. They make different sounds to warn enemies, attract a mate and call to each other. Many "throw" their voices to deceive enemies and burrowing owls scare off predators by making a sound like a rattlesnake shaking its tail. Fascinating facts for the young researcher.
