Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Marlyn Roberts
Owlsight is vintage Mercedes Lackey-to some that is not a good thing, but to Lackey fans it is a very good thing. Lackey's husband is credited as co-author on this volume, but its tone seems no different from her other work. This title is the second in yet another Valdemar trilogy, which does not have a collective name. One can certainly read and comprehend this second book without having read the first, but some background in Valdemarian history is a must. The protagonists of the story are Keisha and Darian; readers may remember Darian from the previous book in the trilogy, Owlflight (DAW, 1997/VOYA December 1997). In this installment Keisha, a fledgling Healer, feels overwhelmed because she is not properly trained and does not think she can leave her village without a Healer while she goes away to study. Darian, from the same village of Errold's Grove, has been adopted by a clan of Hawkbrothers. When they discover the possibility that a tribe of barbarians might attack Errold's Grove, Darian and his Hawkbrothers go to the village's aid, coincidentally taking along teachers for Keisha. Of course a romance between Darian and Keisha is almost to be expected, but only the first glimmerings appear in this book. Presumably the relationship will mature in the next installment, Owlknight. If teen readers are not already Lackey fans, they should start with either The Last Herald-Mage trilogy or The Heralds of Valdemar trilogy. Once they are hooked, they will beg you for the rest. VOYA Codes: 4Q 2P S A/YA (Better than most, marred only by occasional lapses, For the YA reader with a special interest in the subject, Senior High-defined as grades 10 to 12 and adults).

Once again Larry Dixon adds to Mercedes what she lacked in her other books. The plot slows a bit in the middle but I still enjoyed the read.
