Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Tariq M. Malik, MD (University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description: This concise and clear review covers almost every common practical situation in the daily practice of anesthesia.
Purpose: The book carries on in the tradition of the Oxford Handbook series, which strives to provide comprehensive, evidence-based information in a handy fashion. The book fully satisfies that goal. In anesthesia, quite often time is of the essence and it is not uncommon for a practitioner to need a handy source of information to quickly come up with an anesthetic plan for some unfamiliar situation. This book goes a long way in being that source of information.
Audience: The book is intended for students, residents, and practicing anesthesiologists. It covers all major and minor topics in a clear, precise, clinical fashion.
Features: The first section of 13 chapters deals with the preoperative and preanesthetic assessment, covering the anesthetic implications of different organ dysfunctions in separate chapters. The chapter on consent and anesthetic risk has one of the best discussions I have read on the topic. The 18 chapters in the second section discuss anesthetic considerations for different surgical specialties, including vascular, thoracic, ENT, neurosurgery, plastic, and orthopedic surgery as well as same day surgery, laser surgery and CT/MRI imaging. Separate sections are dedicated to obstetric anesthesia, pediatric anesthesia, and anesthesia for emergencies, as well as acute pain and regional anesthesia. The last chapter is especially worth mentioning, with its useful hard facts, including equations, lab values, graphs, etc. The book is very clear in its objective and comprehensive in its approach. The authors are very clear about what they what to include or exclude.
Assessment: The book is meant to be an everyday companion for the anesthesiologist or student. It is sturdy, built to withstand even rough handling. It is a source of useful and practical information at a moment's notice. Every topic is presented in way that the pertinent information can be gathered quickly without wasting time. The book includes not just hard facts and numbers, but also a clinical approach to the patient. In short, it definitely has a place in every resident's and anesthesiologist's pocket.

    Great concise read

This is an excellent review book - gives alot of information in concise paragraphs. THis book is best used to brush up on a topic. I often use it before starting emergency cases when there isn't enough time to do in depth reading.

I highly recommend this for any medical student interested in anesthesia and residents in training.
