Description: This quick-access handbook covers a wide range of endocrine disorders, offering brief discussions of physiology, pathophysiology, and clinical management. About the size of a trade paperback, it is meant for easy transport. The U.K. version was published in 2009.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide concise, organized, and up-to-date information about endocrine disorders. It is not meant to replace a comprehensive endocrine textbook. In a time when textbooks become outdated quickly, the authors' objective of providing current information is worthy.
Audience: Students, residents, and specialists managing patients with endocrine and metabolic diseases are the intended audience, which is appropriate.
Features: A detailed table of contents thoroughly outlines the topics covered in each of the 13 sections. In fact, this is one of the best parts of the book — readers can use the table of contents page at the front of the book or the index at the back to quickly locate a particular subject. Each topic is treated very briefly, but many sections have further reading references for those who would like more information. Although there are many tables, one shortcoming of the book is the lack of pictures.
Assessment: This is useful for its designated purpose — as a handbook of up-to-date information on endocrine disorders. However, some readers, especially specialists in the field, may find it too brief.
