Obstetrics and Gynecology is one of the four core student clerkships in the U.S., meaning that every student must take a clinical, in-hospital course requiring a small manual; an Ob/Gyn is one of the largest professional specialties, with 41,000 practicing physicians in the U.S. Thus, Obstetrics and Gynecology is always one of the top-selling titles in any medical series. This handbook will be a book that 3rd and 4th year medical students and residents carry in their pockets to answer all the questions and situtations that arise on wards. Ob/Gyn physicians will also be a core audience. As this book also presents more information than a standard handbook, it will occupy a unique niche, offering the best features of a small, practical manual and a small textbook of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Errol Norwitz of Yale is a high-profile U.S. Ob/Gyn physician and is highly regarded.

Reviewer: Shayna M Norman, BA, MD anticipa(University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine)
Description: This handbook has been adapted from the U.K. edition to serve as a quick reference guide to diagnosis, investigation, and management of conditions encountered in the field of obstetrics and gynecology.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a user-friendly, quick reference, pocket guide to be used for answering questions on the wards. This book provides an overview of guidelines for diagnosis and management of many commonly encountered obstetric and gynecologic problems. The U.S. edition reflects the practice of obstetrics and gynecology from the U.S. perspective.
Audience: The handbook is written for all levels of medical professionals from nurses and medical students to attending physicians. It can also be useful to a wide range of medical specialties including obstetrics and gynecology, family practice, and emergency medicine. Dr. Errol Norwitz, from Yale University, provides a fitting adaptation of the U.K edition for a U.S audience.
Features: Each chapter covers a major subject subdivided into many 1-2 page topics. Subjects covered include normal and abnormal pregnancy as well as common conditions encountered in subspecialty areas of obstetrics and gynecology. The book only serves as an overview of each topic and is not meant to be comprehensive. References for recommended further reading are provided. There are many areas in the handbook where the author repeats previously addressed subjects, even within the same chapter, for the sake of convenience to the reader. However, when the book is read straight through, the repetition can be distracting. Due to the quick-reference nature of this book, there are not many illustrations. However, when the book addresses more complicated anatomy, maneuvers, and procedures, illustrations would add much to the book.
Assessment: Overall, this U.S. edition of the Oxford Handbook serves its purpose as a quick-reference, pocket overview of issues encountered in obstetrics and gynecology. This is a useful tool for all levels of medical professionals involved in patient care. It is well written, evidence based, and thorough.
