Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"You're the best we'll make you better is the promise of the Top Gun school to its fighter pilots. This handbook is in the same mould...As a specialist I read this handbook with pleasure and shame; pleasure at a lucid concise style and shame at how much I have forgotten that the authors cover comprehensively."--International Dental Journal

Louis Graham
This is truly a handbook of many areas in the field of dentistry. This second edition appears four years after its predecessor. Though the book breaks dentistry down to 18 chapters, it is made up of hundreds of pages of a variety of topics related to the field of dentistry. "The purpose is to allow the reader easy access to a host of information about dentistry in one book. Such objectives may be worthy for dental students or dentists who believe such a book may be necessary, but this book wouldn't be needed in a full library in an office. The authors, in my opinion, cover so many areas that it makes me wonder whether they met their objectives. "This book is for students and recent graduates who want to interact with it (i.e.,. the clinicians would take the time to make notes in the blank pages). In my opinion there are enough quality books that cover such subjects in a better and easier manner. "This book is composed primarily of text with very few illustrations and diagrams. The references are minimal. The table of contents is standard, and I found the index to be a very good one. One unique feature of this book is that it covers more areas in dentistry than in any book I've read. "This handbook may be useful to the most recent graduates or dental student but I doubt that it is necessary. The authors believe that such a handbook will invite its reader to interact with it, an objective I find unrealistic. Although the book contains fact after fact, I found it too superficial in too many areas for me to be comfortable in using this as a constant reference.
From The Critics
Reviewer: Lou Graham, DDS (University of Chicago Medical Center)
Description: This is truly a handbook of many areas in the field of dentistry. This second edition appears four years after its predecessor. Though the book breaks dentistry down to 18 chapters, it is made up of hundreds of pages of a variety of topics related to the field of dentistry.
Purpose: The purpose is to allow the reader easy access to a host of information about dentistry in one book. Such objectives may be worthy for dental students or dentists who believe such a book may be necessary, but this book wouldn't be needed in a full library in an office. The authors, in my opinion, cover so many areas that it makes me wonder whether they met their objectives.
Audience: This book is for students and recent graduates who want to interact with it (i.e.,. the clinicians would take the time to make notes in the blank pages). In my opinion there are enough quality books that cover such subjects in a better and easier manner.
Features: This book is composed primarily of text with very few illustrations and diagrams. The references are minimal. The table of contents is standard, and I found the index to be a very good one. One unique feature of this book is that it covers more areas in dentistry than in any book I've read.
Assessment: This handbook may be useful to the most recent graduates or dental student but I doubt that it is necessary. The authors believe that such a handbook will invite its reader to interact with it, an objective I find unrealistic. Although the book contains fact after fact, I found it too superficial in too many areas for me to be comfortable in using this as a constant reference.
