Overview

The first three editions of this invaluable handbook have been tremendously successful thanks to their accessibility and comprehensive cover of the medical specialties. Thousands of revisions and updates have been made and a new chapter has been added for the fourth edition. This best-selling book will give medical students doing their rotations absolute confidence on the ward, in the lecture theatre, and revising for exams. Now printed in three colours to make the information you need even easier to find when you really need it!

The book contains predominantly color illustrations, with some black-and-white illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"A pocket manual covering the most frequent clinical problems in all fields of medicine, both medical and surgical....More compact and directly practical than the Merck Manual." --Annals of Internal Medicine

"Very useful to students and residents as well as practitioners. It has masterfully and interestingly integrated the basic sciences with the art of clinical specialties by way of current references and practical pearls. It is highly recommended as an easy resource book and should be available in libraries, bookstores, and clinical settings." --Tomas G. Lumicao, Jr., MD, Doody's Journal

Tomas Guiab Lumicao
This new edition handbook integrates the basic sciences and the clinical specialties in a concise and practical format. "The purpose is to provide a handbook of clinical specialties with multicolor design for easier appreciation and incorporation of the latest updates. New topics have been added to keep abreast with the fast and ever changing body of knowledge. "Although it is primarily designed for clinical clerks, students, residents, and practitioners as well will find this book a valuable resource. The authors are credible in their field of expertise. "The multicolor design is particularly unique with this book. Collating various tables, graphs, charts, and caricatures (psychiatry) with current and diverse references, make it very informative and interesting. The new drug index, while simple, gives instant reference for dosing. Likewise, the new chapter on prehospital care provides wider spectrum of its clinical scope. "In the final analysis, this handbook is very useful to students and residents as well as practitioners. It has masterfully and interestingly integrated the basic sciences with the art of clinical specialties by way of current references and practical pearls. It is highly recommended as an easy resource book and should be available in libraries, bookstores, and clinical settings.

This fifth edition, updated from the 1995 version, is a compendium of the nuts and bolts of clinical medicine as practiced in each specialty. Numerous illustrations and diagrams lend a down-to-earth feel to the text. "The book purports to be a general overview of clinical practice, designed to be helpful to specialists needing insight into areas of medicine outside the realm of their own specialty. In this regard, the authors clearly and succinctly accomplish their goal. "Targeted to students and residents, the manual will assist many physicians, regardless of specialty, in providing a higher level of comprehensive care to their patients. The Oxford physicians are clear authorities in compiling in this work. "Every major specialty is covered in a succinct and straightforward fashion. Illustrations and algorithms guide the reader through a text that is packed with information. The laminated, pocket-sized format is further evidence of the authors' pragmatism. However, the condensed, small print may bother some senior physicians. "Possibly the best pocket text available to cover all clinical specialties, this British version of the Washington University Manual of Medical Therapeutics (Franklin Electronic Publishers, Inc) is also available online, with Internet updates continually added. To condense the essence of all specialty practice into one portable text is a task that would otherwise seem impossible. However, this work comes closer to achieving this goal than any text I have ever seen. This is an outstanding contribution to the world of the busy practitioner.
