Overview

This handbook provides a fast, reliable look-up reference on all chest diseases - for junior doctors, trainee specialists in respiratory medicine, and other health workers.

First there are chapters on all the major respiratory symptoms. Once the differential diagnosis has been made, the reader can turn to the pages on the respiratory diseases, each of which is covered in a consistent format including practical tips for the out-patient clinic or ward setting. There is a unique section on how to do practical procedures, together with essential technical and reference information. Useful pages on lung and bronchial anatomy, CT anatomy, lung function and blood-gas nomograms, and a list of useful web sites are included for easy reference.

Like all the Oxford Handbooks, this handbook combines authority, relevance and reliability.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Renjitha Ignatius, M.D.(William Beaumont Hospitals)
Description: This book provides readers with a quick and fairly complete reference on different clinical situations in respiratory medicine they might face while they are on clinics or on the floors. It flows well from one topic to another and is well organized. The summaries and descriptions are focused and the reader gets a quick overview of the topic, especially when using this as a quick reference guide. The book will be very useful as guide for residents and clinicians while working in the emergency department or in the intensive care unit.
Purpose: This book is intended for quick reference for pulmonologists, intensivists, trainee specialists in respiratory medicine, and other health workers. It clearly meets the author's objectives.
Audience: Although this book is intended for anyone who is interested in pulmonary medicine, it will be very useful for trainees in many affiliated fields in internal medicine and it will come in handy for internal medicine residents rotating through pulmonary medicine.
Features: The formatting of the book, with the abbreviations and their expansions in the introductory chapter, makes it all the more accessible for anyone who might need more information. References at the end of each topic are very helpful for detailed reading. There could have been more charts and tables, which can be a better way of presenting information and make it easier to memorize. The chapter on lung cancer is a good example of a quick and complete reference if you encounter a clinical situation. The sections on radiotherapy and chemotherapy are exceptionally well detailed for a handbook. The mini topic on pediatric lung disorders pertinent to adult practice is well done.
Assessment: This superb reference is well suited for a trainee as well a busy practicing internist and those in services affiliated with respiratory medicine. The brief discussion of many topics, the bullet format, and the good reference lists make the book attractive as a handbook.
