Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Nicely illustrated and bound, this is the sixth in a projected eight-volume series on human knowledge and achievement. This entry covers the world's engineering achievements and traces the development of technology from the earliest civilizations to the present. Major inventors, concepts, and inventions are described in entries arranged alphabetically, ranging from a few sentences to over 1000 words. Illustrations and explanatory diagrams accompany many entries. While the text is liberally cross-referenced, it lacks any bibliographical references to additional readings for study in greater depth. Also, there is no general index. While emerging concepts such as biotechnology and genetic engineering are described, there are no entries for virtual reality or fuzzy logic. Perhaps inappropriate for most academic library reference collections, this may nevertheless be a useful ready reference work for small to mid-sized public and school libraries. The publisher plans to complete this series with an Index and Ready Reference volume.--Ed.-- Joe Accardi, Northeastern Illinois Univ. Lib., Chicago
Booknews
A handsome reference for the general reader in the style of How things work. As current as neural networks and digital audio tape, some 2,500 entries of up to a couple hundred words include lucid multicolor drawings together with b&w and color photos. An irresistably inviting reference that should reach all elementary and secondary students when it is most possible to proselytize. Suffers, naturally, from such Brit terms as "colour" and "lift". A splendid reference, entertainment, and education for those of all ages and expertise. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR booknews.com
Zom Zoms
This sixth volume in the eight-volume "Oxford Illustrated Encyclopedia" series covers technology and invention separately from science, which was covered in "The Physical World" and "The Natural World", volumes 1 and 2 in the series. Technology is defined as the "application of science to useful ends." The purpose of the work is to give a broad and international view of technology, emphasizing both historical and modern aspects As with all volumes in this series, the work is arranged alphabetically. "See" and "see also" references are denoted by an asterisk. The length of articles ranges from a definition of a sentence or two to over a page for such subjects as "Flying, History of" and "Computer, History of". Illustrations include color and black-and-white photographs, charts, graphs, time charts, and diagrams. Diagrams are clear and easy to understand. Those for "Fire Fighting Equipment", "Genetic Engineering", and "Harness and Saddlery" provide a visual understanding not possible with text. The photography is outstanding, as evidenced by the pictures of a diving bell and drilling rig. The subjects range from such highly technical ones as "Biotechnology" to the more mundane "Lawn-Mower" More than 150 important figures in technology and invention have approximately a paragraph devoted to their achievements. The inclusion of such geographically widespread individuals as Edward Jenner, Augusta Ada Lovelace, Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, Gottlieb Daimler, and Isaac Singer indicate the international flavor maintained throughout the work. There are a few curious omissions. For example, Robert Koch is mentioned in the articles on Kitasato Shibasaburo and Wilhelm Kolle, but he does not have his own entry This work has a distinctive British flavor primarily because of terms used e.g., "lift" for elevator, "lorry" for truck, "petrol" for gasoline, "paraffin" for kerosene. The U.S. equivalents are given at the beginning of entries for these terms, but there are no cross-references from the U.S. terms to the British ones "The Oxford Illustrated Encyclopedia of Invention and Technology" is a necessary purchase for all libraries owning other volumes in the set. Two more volumes remain to be published. It is also an excellent one-volume reference for high school, public, and small academic libraries that cannot afford larger sets on science and technology. The illustrations in this work are worth the price alone.
