Overview

The Oxford Textbook of Psychiatry has attracted worldwide acclaim for its lucid, comprehensive, and practical treatment of clinical psychiatry. It is not only the textbook of choice for trainee psychiatrists, but also has earned and enviable reputation as an invaluable reference resource for practicing psychiatrists and general practitioners.
Emphasizing the practical clinical skills required for assessment and treatment, the Third Edition continues to provide an introduction to all the topics required by the trainee psychiatrist. Mainly concerned with general psychiatry, it also includes introductory sections on child psychiatry, mental retardation, and forensic psychiatry, as well as addressing problems in managing individual patients and the organization of services.
The text of this Third Edition has once again been extensively revised to take account of the most recent advances in knowledge and practice. The latest revisions of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD10) and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSMIV) have been fully incorporated, and there are significantly altered sections on stress-related and adjustment disorders, drugs and other physical treatments, psychological treatments, and psychiatric services. There is a new section on pharmacology. Elsewhere, necessary changes have been made to bring the book up to date while preserving the original clinical descriptions, and this edition incorporates an attractive new format.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Sahana Misra
This is an updated revision of a book that comprehensively covers all aspects of clinical psychiatry. The second edition was published in 1988. "The purpose is to provide introductory information about general psychiatry. The authors assume that more comprehensive texts will be consulted for further details. This book is more thorough than the authors acknowledge and definitely meets their objectives. "This book is primarily targeted to psychiatry residents and medical students. It is secondarily targeted to practicing psychiatrists as a source of reference. Other clinicians may also find this text useful. The authors are all from the University of Oxford and are noteworthy authorities. "Tables are appropriately incorporated into the text, enhancing its clear and concise nature. Several references are provided that are all current or pertinent, ICD-10 and DSM-IV criteria are compared and contrasted, and chapters on subspecialties such as forensics and child psychiatry are included. "This text is an excellent introductory textbook for residents and a valuable reference for psychiatrists. Because the text is of English origin, information such as law practices in England and Wales is included, adding to the length of the text. Regardless, this text would be a useful addition to any health sciences library or bookstore. The new edition is necessary since it incorporates DSM-IV and ICD-10, both new since the second edition.
