Editorial Reviews

Kevin B. Gebke
The editors of this textbook aim to provide readers with an understanding of the principles involved with the physiology and common injuries/syndromes associated with sports medicine. This is a second edition. The first was published in 1994. "According to the editors, the purpose is to provide an updated version of the first edition, which was intended as a concise reference for all aspects of sports medicine. The editors are successful in meeting their objective and have produced a useful tool for those practicing within the scope of sports medicine. "The book is geared toward the sports medicine clinician. The topics and detail involved are more in depth than would be expected for use by the practitioner without sports medicine expertise. This is the editors' goal, and my interpretation. The editors and contributors are credible authorities on the covered material. "The text is organized into a brief history, an extensive review of the physiologic and medical aspects of sports medicine, and an in depth description of injuries encountered. In the injury sections, the joints are addressed individually; this is helpful in organizing and comparing specific conditions. Many useful schematic diagrams and illustrations are included. Many basic principles are assumed to be known by the reader, and this may limit the text's usefulness to clinicians without extensive experience. "This text should prove to be particularly useful to sports medicine clinicians as both a precise reference and general learning tool. The editors are effective in covering a wide array of physiologic and pathologic material and make use of a multitude of reliable references. The material included is current, and for that reason this second edition is justified.
From the Publisher

In conclusion, the second edition of this valuable text in a tour de force unquestionably worth having on yourshelf. It

can enhance your ability to treat athletic patients of all ages and sexes. It is an easily accessible and wellindexed

superb reference no matter what your specialty is.r
