This book describes the general basis of oxidative stress responses in eukaryotic cells and presents the underlying mechanisms in the context of cancer, AIDS, and neurodegenerative diseases. As stated in Montagnier's preface, ""this book presents different views of oxygen and nitrite-free radicals, from the chemical to the clinical standpoints, via biochemistry and cellular and molecular biology."" This world view of oxygen's dark side is spread across 50 chapters from 200-plus contributors. Not forgotten are the benefits of certain levels of radicals and their counterparts, antioxidants. This allows for a wonderful introduction of the pharmacology of antioxidants, still a playground for wonder drugs, and a quiet contemplation of (although not mentioned by name) Manfred von Ardenne's suggestions on oxygen therapy in cancer patients. The book is written for ""fundamental"" researchers and physicians specializing in the aforementioned diseases. Although oriented toward actual research contributions, the chapters are detailed enough to provide basic, sometimes textbook-style, knowledge. Illustrations, references, tables, and index are well-balanced. Graphics are clear and straightforward. Some contributions contain black-and-white and color photographs of high technical quality. Although each separate theme addressed in this book is certainly worthy of publication, the collection as such is disorienting. The conglomerate of basic research and disease and treatment-related aspects is rather damaging to the subject. In fact, some of the disease and treatment-related chapters have a rather obscure content. The book would have needed an editor who is a specialist in the biology ofperoxidation, rather than an indisputably excellent virologist like Montagnier. A missed opportunity, indeed.
