DISCLAIMER: I know of only two books that claim that weight loss is an infallible by-product of correct breathing: Jill Johnson's OXYCISE! and the pioneering Pam Grout's JUMPSTART YOUR METABOLISM. I am personally losing weight while using both 'systems,' but I am also a member of WEIGHTWATCHERS, which is based on food selection and portion control much more than exercise, so the test is not a fair one. I do believe that systematic deep breathing, whether slow (Grout) or fast and with inner resistance (Johnson) is great for good health. END DISCLAIMER. *** OXYCISE! comes in a three-part package: book, video DVD and audio tape. All three make the same points. The theoretical point is that most adults use only a quarter or less of their lung capacity. Yet our lungs play a key role in weight loss. Lungs supply oxygen and oxygen burns away fat. It also removes the wastes produced when fat is burned. More oxygen, more weight loss. Q. E. D. *** OXYCISE! demands vigorous, hard, day in and day out 15 minutes, preferably consecutive, of deep breathing and hard exhalation. The basic rhythym is to breathe in diaphragmatically as much air as you can quickly through the nose, ending in three final quick inhalations, followed at once by very vigorous, forced exhalations fast as you can through the mouth -- also ending in three final quck puffs of breath. During exhalation, tighten your stomach muscles and clench between your legs. This sequence is repeated four more times. Jill Johnson gives ten basic postures for variety, with different muscles being tensed. By book's conclusion she has introduced ways to do the hard, rapid breathing standing, sitting or lying down. Take your pick of postures. But always, always, always do the 15 minutes. *** That's it. At other times in the day: at church, driving, in boring meetings, just breathe slowly in and out: deeply. No facial contortions. In and out, in and out. DEEPLY. Tensions will melt. Deeper breathing at any pace burns more calories than the shallow upper chest breathing most of us do most of the time. Just try it for yourself. You may not lose weight. But you will feel your lung capacity growing. And you will pave the way for yoga, tai chi, marathon running, meditation and many other forms of exertion for which breathing is essential. -OOO-
