Overview

There's nothing quite like the quiet pleasure of an acoustic guitar and a sweet folk ballad -- but not on this two-disc compendium of chaos culled from the Sacramento stop on last year's Ozzfest tour. Using enough wattage to garner them a fair bit of blame for California's current energy crisis, new kids on the block like Disturbed (who roar through a chilling version of "Voices") and Coal Chamber (who deliver an appropriately unhinged "Loco") drag metal kicking and screaming into the new millennium. Outside of the songs from groups like Powerman 5000 and Pitchshifter (whose clangorous "Keep It Clean" is a highlight), which put a postmodern electro-twist on things, most of the 19-track collection is pretty traditional. That's particularly true of the bigger names, such as Slayer (represented by a bone-crunching "Angel of Death") and Sepultura (briefly reunited with original singer Max Cavalera for a no-holds-barred rendition of "Attitude"). And since you can't have an Ozzfest without Oz himself, the grand old man of metal contributes a pair of tunes: a hell-raising "I Don't Know" and a disc-ending stomp through the offbeat "Perry Mason." Second Stage Live isn't the kind of disc that will win any new converts to the metal-mongering cause, but those already committed to ear damage couldn't ask for a better tool to finish off those auditory canals.
