Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Sleeping Bear Press has produced many state alphabet books in its "Discover America" series. The format is a color spread devoted to a letter or two of the alphabet, with four lines of text on a state characteristic—"A" is for Agriculture, "B" is for Bison, etc. For each letter, a sidebar contains details. Watercolor illustrations add greatly to each book's interest. The test for an alphabet book is whether using the alphabet strengthens the presentation. In this title, the alphabetic structure leads to superfluous entries that weaken the book. While "F" is for Fargo works, "Z" is for Zap does not. ("Z is for Zap, tiny city/You can zip there from Hazen in minutes,/And just like the rest of our towns/(i)t's got friendliness flowing within it.") And in making the text fit a required form, too many of the entries violate basic rules of composition—such as consistent and parallel construction. While flawed for general readers, families looking for souvenirs or students studying North Dakota may find this title useful. 2005, Sleeping Bear Press/Thomson Gale, Ages 3 to 8.
