Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 1-5-A creative and informative blend of text and art, this alphabet book celebrates much of what the city has to offer. Each left-hand page has a large, decorated capital letter designed as an icon for what it represents and several paragraphs in rather small print that give a good amount of interesting information on each topic. Each right-hand page is devoted to a large, expressive illustration depicting the subject of the spread. The colorful crayon and pencil artwork was drawn by Philadelphia elementary and middle school children. Just like the city's diverse population, these pictures show a variety of ethnicities and art styles, but every one is a treasure. The last spread is a montage of all 26 iconic letters. The book is a grand tour of the city, its history, and its creative spirit. Although most suited to independent reading, classes studying the region would enjoy this title as a group. It could also serve as an inspiration for students to create similar books for any geographical area.-Lynda Ritterman, Atco Elementary School, Waterford, NJ Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
