Children's Literature - Lesley Moore Vossen
This photographic picture book is part of a series of alphabet books by the publisher, featuring different countries. There is much information about Poland presented in the book—presented in a delightful and and easy to read manner. From A (is for amber) to Z (is for Zakopane—a mountain village in the high Tatras), the book never talks down to the reader. The photos range from landscape photos (V is for Vistula, the longest river in Poland or H is for Hall of Clothes, a covered market in the heart of the old town of Krakow…) to close ups of some delicious Polish foods (B is for Borsch or T is for Toru?skie Pierniki, gingerbread biscuits…). The text provides phonetic pronunciation guidelines to assist parents or teacher who are reading the book aloud. Well executed graphic design throughout and charming photos, such as the one of five Polish children polishing off pieces of Makowiec (a traditional Polish poppy cake) should make most young readers want to learn more about Poland.
