More About This Book

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This lovely title contains a wealth of information about the state of Idaho, as well as soft water-color illustrations of the scenic beauty and outstanding people of the state. It is in alphabet-book format with short explanations for young readers in large print and somewhat forced rhymes, with much more information on the subject presented in the sidebar text at a more difficult reading level. Idaho emerges as a rich and varied state with an exciting history which includes not only events of significance in the westward expansion of the United States but also people who made significant contributions to industry and culture. Scenic areas like Hell's Canyon, Sun Valley, Craters of the Moon National Monument and white water rivers induce a desire to visit Idaho, and the book abounds with seldom-heard facts in the state's history. One longs to recommend it as a reference resource, but a difficulty lies in the format which forces, for example, information on the Basque settlers from the Pyrenees Mountains into the letter "X," and facts about Hell's Canyon into the letter "D." The beginning reader's four-line rhymes are uneven in quality but the over-all information about a less well-known state makes this book worthy of consideration for inclusion in any library or personal collection. 2005, Sleeping Bear Press, Ages 4 to 10.
