Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Summer Whiting
Paddington Bear is going to spend a day at the beach. Little does he know those sneaky seagulls have something up their sleeves. Paddington makes a sand castle. Unfortunately his bucket gets washed away in the ocean. The seagulls are watching his every move. While Paddington is flying a kite, the seagulls assume he is trying to learn how to fly. He then stands on a rock and peers out to sea with his binoculars. He is hoping to spot his missing kite. The seagulls notice that Paddington has a tasty bun in his pocket. As he is struggling with his beach chair, the seagulls decide to swoop in and make the bun their dinner. They attack, taking him by surprise! But Paddington is not flustered. He always keeps a marmalade sandwich under his hat just for times like this. The seagulls are not named but referred to as seagull number 1, seagull number 2, and so forth. This would be an appropriate read aloud for a K-1 classroom. Students will be able to predict which number seagull will speak next as they count their way up to 10. Children will also be given the opportunity to make predictions based upon Paddington's actions. This would be an enjoyable interactive read aloud for younger children. Reviewer: Summer Whiting

Meet the Author

Michael Bond began chronicling the adventures of Paddington Bear in A Bear Called Paddington in 1958. Fortunately, bears don't need much encouragement, and Paddington has since filled the pages of fourteen novels, a variety of picture books, and many other projects written for the young at heart. Paddington's mentor lives in London, England, with his wife, Sue, and a guinea pig named Olga da Polga.

R. W. Alley has illustrated a number of books featuring Paddington Bear, including Paddington Bear All Day and Paddington Bear Goes to Market. He lives in Rhode Island with his wife and their two children.

Zoƫ B. Alley is the author of There's a Wolf at the Door and There's a Princess in the Palace, both illustrated by her husband, R. W. Alley.
