Overview

Paediatrics and Child Health approaches the disorders of childhood by how they present to the practitioner or casualty officer. The reader is taken step-by-step through a maze of clinical presentations and the appropriate diseases are discussed at relevant or corresponding locations in the text. Only information essential to the future practitioner or casualty officer is included; rare conditions of limited clinial importance to the student are specifically excluded. The philosophy is to teach how to recogise the ill child who will require further investigation rather than encourage 'list learning' about rare diseases seen in teaching hospitals.

The book is designed for easy use with clear headings, colour-coded chapters and special 'At A Glance' boxes that summarize the key points of the important clinical presentations and disorders. Paediatric emergencies are highlighted in a separate chapter. The importance of the balance between the community and hospital paediatrics is reflected by the author team--two excellent teachers of community and hospital paediatrics.

The book contains predominantly color illustrations, with some black-and-white illustrations.

Written by community and hospital-based paediatricians, this is the ultimate textbook of paediatrics for medical students today. Problem-based with the focus on clinical presentations not disease entities, it also covers individual diseases integrated in the text, marked by a special icon. Well structured and indexed for ease of navigation. "At a glance" boxes in 4-colour.

Editorial Reviews

Booknews
This text focuses on helping the future practitioner and casualty officer develop a working approach to pediatric problems and child health from the angle of symptoms and problems as they present to the primary care physician. Twelve chapters discuss pediatric medicine in the context of the community; the holistic requirements of children; pathophysiological basis of pediatric illness; basic symptoms and signs; diagnosis of common disorders; effective communication; physical and emotional requirements of infants, toddlers, and adolescents; and requesting investigations appropriate to the clinical setting. Fully illustrated in color, it includes "at a glance" boxes that summarize the key points. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
