Reviewer: Barry Starr, MD (Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description: This is the second edition of a title in the At A Glance series intended primarily for medical students that also is helpful for interns, nurses, and allied health professionals. The book covers common areas in pediatrics in typically one- to two-page chapters with photos and illustrations from a problem-based or symptom-based approach.
Purpose: It seeks to be a general pediatric resource for medical students and pediatric trainees. This edition has been revised so that the order of chapter topics reflects normal child development. The authors intend this as a quick overview of a number of topics across pediatrics and they have succeeded in this objective.
Audience: Written with medical students or early pediatric trainees in mind, the book would also be useful for nursing and allied health professionals as well as anyone wanting a quick overview of common pediatric topics.
Features: The book is arranged in short, well-illustrated chapters that follow normal child development. The chapters are brief and touch upon the high points of each problem or symptom. A "Key Points" summary follows each chapter and a short set of questions and answers concludes the book. What stands out is the book's accessibility as it provides brief but relatively complete overviews of a variety of topics. Such a format would be helpful for students as part of their clinical rotation to help jog their memory about pediatric differential diagnoses.
Assessment: Well written at a level suitable for medical students, the book is an excellent companion for students during a pediatric rotation as an overview of symptoms with their differential diagnoses as well as jumping off point for further investigation into more detailed pediatric disease literature. The preface notes that each chapter has been revised to reflect current practice, that the chapters have been rearranged to facilitate better understanding, and that new chapters have been added to address emerging problems in pediatrics.
From the Publisher
“Overall, nurses will find this to be a well priced general book on the medical care of children and a reliable provider of salient information at a glance.”  (Nursing Children and Young People, 1 November 2012)
