Biography

Not only has Nora Roberts written more bestsellers than anyone else in the world (according to Publishers Weekly), she’s also created a hybrid genre of her own: the futuristic detective romance. And that’s on top of mastering every subgenre in the romance pie: the family saga, the historical, the suspense novel. But this most prolific and versatile of authors might never have tapped into her native talent if it hadn't been for one fateful snowstorm.

As her fans well know, in 1979 a blizzard trapped Roberts at home for a week with two bored little kids and a dwindling supply of chocolate. To maintain her sanity, Roberts started scribbling a story -- a romance novel like the Harlequin paperbacks she'd recently begun reading. The resulting manuscript was rejected by Harlequin, but that didn't matter to Roberts. She was hooked on writing. Several rejected manuscripts later, her first book was accepted for publication by Silhouette.

For several years, Roberts wrote category romances for Silhouette -- short books written to the publisher's specifications for length, subject matter and style, and marketed as part of a series of similar books. Roberts has said she never found the form restrictive. "If you write in category, you write knowing there's a framework, there are reader expectations," she explained. "If this doesn't suit you, you shouldn't write it. I don't believe for one moment you can write well what you wouldn't read for pleasure."

Roberts never violated the reader's expectations, but she did show a gift for bringing something fresh to the romance formula. Her first book, Irish Thoroughbred (1981), had as its heroine a strong-willed horse groom, in contrast to the fluttering young nurses and secretaries who populated most romances at the time. But Roberts's books didn't make significant waves until 1985, when she published Playing the Odds, which introduced the MacGregor clan. It was the first bestseller of many.

Roberts soon made a name for herself as a writer of spellbinding multigenerational sagas, creating families like the Scottish MacGregors, the Irish Donovans and the Ukrainian Stanislaskis. She also began working on romantic suspense novels, in which the love story unfolds beneath a looming threat of violence or disaster. She grew so prolific that she outstripped her publishers' ability to print and market Nora Roberts books, so she created an alter ego, J.D. Robb. Under the pseudonym, she began writing romantic detective novels set in the future. By then, millions of readers had discovered what Publishers Weekly called her "immeasurable diversity and talent."

Although the style and substance of her books has grown, Roberts remains loyal to the genre that launched her career. As she says, "The romance novel at its core celebrates that rush of emotions you have when you are falling in love, and it's a lovely thing to relive those feelings through a book."

Good To Know

Roberts still lives in the same Maryland house she occupied when she first started writing -- though her carpenter husband has built on some additions. She and her husband also own Turn the Page Bookstore Café in Boonsboro, Maryland. When Roberts isn't busy writing, she likes to drop by the store, which specializes in Civil War titles as well as autographed copies of her own books.

Roberts sued fellow writer Janet Dailey in 1997, accusing her of plagiarizing numerous passages of her work over a period of years. Dailey paid a settlement and publicly apologized, blaming stress and a psychological disorder for her misconduct.

    Another great ending

    I read the reviews of those of you who have read the book before and went in cautiously. There are three things that I would like to mention: 1. the book alludes to the fact that the ending will be short, how can you have a long ending when someone will sacrifice himself? 2. There has been six months since most of us have read the second installment and one year since the first - I actually found her repetition helpful in both recapping and showing how the characters having progressed in their thinking and findings. 3. I found only one grammatical mistake. The incomplete sentences are her way of writing dialogue because this is how people normally talk. I just love the way Roberts has fun with her characters and the characters have fun with each other. I was not disappointed in the least. I just wish I didn't have to wait so long between books.

    The Pagan Stone by Nora Roberts

    "The Pagan Stone" is a fitting, if a tad disappointing, ending to Nora Robert's Sign of Seven trilogy. The bad guy is vanquished, the last of the three couples unites in a very heated, very sexy relationship, and life in Hawkins Hollow returns to (mostly) normal.

    Cybil is the nomadic free spirit of the three women who eerily converged on Hawkins Hollow just in time for the lead up to the horrors that occur there every seven years. Gage is the nomadic professional gambler who is the third of the three Hawkins Hollow boys who have been destined since the minute of their birth (at the exact same time by the way) to send the demon known as Twisse back to hell. All portents show that THIS iteration of the seven-year curse will be the final one--either Twisse will take corporal form and destroy everything and everyone, or he will be defeated and banished.

    In the first two books of the series, the first two couples respectively, faced challenges and found their strengths for the upcoming battle. In this last book, all three couples must band together to figure out how to use the weapons they have found to defeat Twisse...hopefully without anyone having to die!

    Fantastic build-up, but the final battle was just a bit too short for me. Then, a four page epilogue and the book ends. Bummer. But I guess that's one of the signs of a good book, when you want it to keep going and want to know more about the continuing lives of the protagonists. In that case, the book delivers 100 percent.

    She does it again!

    Despite most reviews I have read this was an amazing ending to yet another trilogy by our beloved NR. The answers she gave to the questions from the first two were just what we needed for this ending !! There were far too few unanswered questions to even let that come into play here . It would be wonderful in the future for there to be more novels with these characters as I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking this well , are some of her best ! Hts of to NR yet again !!

    A bang up finish

    The Pagan Stone is Nora Robert's third installation of her Sign of 7 trilogy. It's Cybil and Gage's story and it does a wonderful job of tying the other two to it. It's fast and furious with the ultimate in good versus evil with just enough paranormal to keep those fans happy and just enough love story to keep her romance fans elated.

    Blah

    I have read all three in this series and the books got progressively more predicitable and mundane. Enjoyed the first but almost abandoned the books entirely by the Pagan Stone. The only reason I finished it is because I had already invested time in the series. Now, a month after finishing the book, I can not remember how the resolution of the book came about. A truely forgettable read.

    The Pagan Stone

    This was third and maybe final installment of the Seven Series. Truth be told I think she ran out of ideas towards the middle. The last half of the book seemed rushed, somewhat predictable and boring. I was disappointed. Not up to her usual standards.

    Blah

    This is the first Nora Roberts book that I've read. I found it lacking in every way. I am an avid reader & I barely got through this book! I have friends that are big Nora Roberts fans. They were disappointed in this book also. Unfortunately I bought a couple of other books by this author but I'm reluctant to read them. I certainly hope they are better.

    Best of the Trilogy

    I read the entire trilogy back-to-back(to-back, I guess). I always do this- save the books until the story is complete. It keeps it fresh in my mind.
    Anyway, this was my favorite book of the Trilogy (I liked them all, but this was my favorite). I laughed at times, I even cried twice!

    I will say, I, too, was disappointed with the epilogue. I was hoping for a fast forward of at least 9 months!!!

    Very disappointing

    I have to say I was not happy with the ending of this trilogy. I needed at least an epilogue about the future-- it just ended with the guys having a beer. Come on! This was the ending of three books, and it was like 4 pages long. Sorry, this was a miss, and I am usually a big fan.

    Great ending to a really good trilogy

    Well written, fast paced, edge of your seat. Romantic, humorous and sexy. Couldn't put it down. The friendship and love between Gabe, Cal, Fox, Layla, Quinn and Cybil is incredible. The relationship between Gabe and Cybil is steamy.

    All around good horror trilogy.

    I enjoyed reading the 3rd book The Pagan Stone in Nora Roberts Sign of Seven series. It's important that you read all three of the books, because they all culminate to a demon shattering ending. Enjoy!

    Loved this series!

    I got so much enjoyment from this series. Read the first two before a while back. Started reading again and actually savored these books. So easy to identify with all of the characters and the town. I usually go thru a book pretty fast but took my time with these just cuz it was so darn good and I didnt want to miss one word. I liked hangin out with these people! I didnt want them to end and would highly recommend!

    Fun Love Affair

    This was beyond what I thought it would be. This is the last of the series "Sign of Seven". Compared to books 1 and 2, this one is at the most the best one. Cybil and Gage's love affair had more liveliness to it. It wasn't so cliche like the first two. It made you wonder would they really, they were both so hard-headed. This story also had more demon and devil appearances, not the average blood and fire stuff that was filled in the others. Because of this last book it made all the others worth the read. It brought tears to my eyes when the came to the realization of what they would have to do. I was scared and at the same time relived that it would all finally be over for them. A truly good love story and happy ending.. not the cliche ending but one that made your heart melt with tears of joy...
