Editorial Reviews

Donald M. Sinclair
The Secrets series is becoming to medicine what the Dummies series is to the rest of life. This is a multiauthored book on pain management in which prestigious authorities take areas of a topic and review it in the question and answer format. The advantage is that you get answers to exact questions, the disadvantage is that the presentation is stop, start, and jerky. The purpose is to provide answers to questions that one is likely to encounter on rounds in the clinic and in oral exams. The book is aimed primarily at the resident or fellow preparing for examinations and is a useful adjunct to other materials. The book has been divided into an area of general clinical approach, an area of clinical syndromes, and areas covering management and organization. The book poses 1234 questions and provides answers to these in 246 pages. Concise answers to precise questions are useful as mind sharpeners and as a review of material. This book provides a comprehensive set of questions in the area of pain management. If readers provide their own answers to the questions before going on to read those provided by the authors, it will be an extremely useful review source. If it is used as a cramming resource by itself without other texts, the user will end up with a spotty and shallow knowledge base. Caveat emptor!
