Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: John Peder Erickson, MD (University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description: This book covers the science and practice of pain medicine.
Purpose: The editor is successful in providing easily readable overview of the diagnosis and therapy of pain.
Audience: It is targeted at practitioners and residents. The authors are authorities in numerous disciplines related to pain. They hail mainly from the U.S.
Features: The book is appropriately illustrated with black-and-white pictures and diagrams. The tables and charts do a good job of supplementing the text. The references are suitable and current, although not exhaustive. Each chapter is followed by a series of questions providing a partial review of the material presented.
Assessment: This attractive and easily handled volume is suitable for the shelf of the practitioner not dealing with pain on a daily basis. The departmental library might be better served by a larger, reference-style work. The sections on special techniques and pain syndromes are well written and will be useful to the resident preparing for board exams.
